WEDNESDAY, Feb. 13 — Finger-style folk tunes will reverberate through the Allen Farmers Market with Lansing singer/songwriter Monte Pride.
His repertoire includes original music as well as covers of ‘60s and ‘70s folk classics from Gillian Welch, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell.
“Farmers markets like this provide a special community space,” Pride said. “They promote social sustainability and opportunity to connect with local vendors and share space that is nice.”
Starting out as a musician in high school, Pride honed his craft at first through the school choir and talent shows.
“From there, I just started performing out in Lansing and found everyone to be very supportive. I was inspired to continue and still am by the support I felt from the community.”
Performing as a finger-style guitarist, Pride uses his thumb to play the bass line of a melody while his forefingers pluck the high notes. The result is a more rhythmic and expansive sound than simple strummed chords.
A new album for Pride is also in the works following the success of his previous entry “Hawthorne Morning Sound” in 2016. It will be Michigan made with local musicians, Pride said.
“My songwriting process normally starts with a phrase, rhyme or verse. Sometimes they'll come to me through the day and I use a notebook I’ll write it down. But more often it is my notes app on my phone. Then I’ll sit down with the guitar and work out a melody.”
The support of the Lansing community is palpable with live music and makes it easy to be an artist here, Pride said.
“I love watching friends, attending their shows and seeing what everyone is doing with the music they’re making. We have a lot of positive support from other artists and there are a lot of music lovers here too.”
