Architecture critic Amanda Harrell-Seyburn says: There’s nothing secret about the stately beauty of the East Lansing Masonic Temple, Lodge No. 482. The stately Italianate building was designed by Mason and Lansing architect Samuel D. Butterworth. The stately four-story red brick building features a symmetrical facade composed of Neo-Classical elements, including engaged pilasters supporting a decorative entablature terminating in an elegant cornice. Characteristically, Masonic temples were designed in accordance with popular regional architectural styles and are highly responsive to adaptive reuse. Other nearby temples noteworthy for their adaptive reuse include Kalamazoo, which is now the Rose Street Market.

Who cares if they control the world — the Masons build great buildings!

All kidding aside, you are hard pressed to find a Masonic temple that’s not beautiful. This particular one, perhaps one of the oldest in the Lansing area, was completed in 1916 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Thankfully, it does not appear to have been altered too much, and it is being reused as office space.
