Architecture critic Amanda Harrell-Seyburn says: Vacant buildings are a fact. Even attractive buildings can become unoccupied. Without proper maintenance, vacant buildings deteriorate quickly and can attract unsavory activities, like vandalism. So, it is important that even vacant properties be protected and maintained for a future occupant. Even a vacant building can be maintained so that it does not contribute to blight. Sure, this building may just be plain ugly. But it’s an eyesore for more than its looks.

It’s a structure like this, with its punched-out windows and weedy parking lot, that just brings you down.

Thing is, whoever owns this building has hidden behind a limited liability corporation, and that means no one can be held accountable for the sorry condition of this thing. That means you can’t call up the owner and complain about how sorry his or her building looks. Can you blame people for hating this thing so much that they threw something through a window? At least the owner, or some good neighbor, came by to board the building up. But it is yet another black eye on a place that just does not need it.

“Eyesore of the Week" is our look at some of the seedier properties in Lansing. It rotates each week with Eye Candy of the Week. If you have a suggestion, please e-mail eye@lansingcitypulse.com or call Neal McNamara at 371- 5600 ex. 17.
