TURN IT DOWN: A survey of Lansing's musical landscape

Negative Red attitude

Posted

From industrial angst and electro, to mellowed-out hippie jams, Lansing has a vast assortment of live music this week.

If you still have a soft spot for KMFD, or early Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, you may want to check out Negative Red this Saturday at Mac’s Bar. The band was formed in 2005 by Carson Duke, a Lansing electronic music veteran, and has been playing the industrial circuit. Duke (vocals/keys) relocated to Fort Wayne, Ind., where he kept the band going and also helped launch Razorblade Society, an online industrial magazine and blog. Also set to take the stage are local metal heads Dozic, Summunura and Knowlyfe. Since it formed in 2001, Knowlyfe has toured endlessly across the country and have played Warped Tour multiple times. A future show to keep an eye out for is the band’s 10-year anniversary show, booked for Sept. 18 at The Loft in Lansing.

9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28,@ Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing. $7, 18 and over. www.myspace.com/  negativeredmusic

Steppin’ In It will rock the Green Door each Monday from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The four-piece band combines blues, folk and Cajun into one melodic blend of traditional, old time music.

For those looking for more of a minimal approach, All Tiny Creatures may be more your style. The band is set to play Mac’s Bar on Sept. 3. Influenced by Philip Glass, XTC and the experimental band Cluster, the band has a huge, untried pop sound.

Also set to perform is the ’90s alt-rockinspired The Plurals.

The Playback and Johnny Unicorn open the show.
