New 'Stomp'-ing grounds

Expect something new when “Stomp” returns to the Wharton Center Friday. Two new full-scale routines are part of the show, as well as updated and restructured sections. But the percussion pageant is staying true to the original premise, said performer Donisha Brown: to create music with everyday objects instead of normal instruments.

The piece “Bins” now incorporates strip-lighting recycling bins, and there is a brand-new piece called “Paint Cans.” “We’re playing paint cans and tossing them around while keeping a rhythm,” said Brown. “At any moment, the paint cans could fall on our heads.”

A routine that the performers like to call “Donuts” involves the troupe wearing tractor tire innertubes around their waists and playing them like a Japanese Taiko drum, according to Brown.
Alongside the new routines are the classics that have been revamped, like the brooms, bins and pole numbers.
