‘Lifted’ Thursday hosts reggae, jam bands

Each Thursday The Loft hosts “Lifted,” a night dedicated to Midwest musicians, with an emphasis on jam, funk, and reggae. This Thursday features Seize the Karp, a local funky progressive rock band.

Also taking the stage is Billiards Music, a Lansing band specializing in acoustic-dub music. The band has a West Coast, reggae-rock sound similar to Sublime. Billiards Music started as a solo project featuring songwriter Brandon Jo (guitar/lead vocals). Three years later, it expanded into a full band, with Lexon Gauna on bass, and Brett Page on drums.

Thursday, Aug. 25 @ The Loft, 414 E. Michigan Ave., $6 in advance, $8 at door, 18 and over. Doors at 9 p.m.

Fun Ender, IfIhadaHiFi bring artful noise to Mac’s

Since forming in 2003, Fun Ender has belted out odd timed, post-punk tunes. On Friday the band headlines a night of noise rock at Mac’s Bar.

From awkward to disturbing songs, the Lansing-based trio has become a local favorite, thanks to their edgy odes of revulsion. While the band, led by Colin Such (vocalist/synth), became known for its signature guitar sound, today the band is revamped with no guitars; instead, two angry synthesizers act as lead instruments (Josh Such, who previously played bass, also rocks a synth). Rounding out the line-up is drummer Josh Spearow, former drummer of the Lansing rock-duo Tahquamenon Falls.

Fun Ender will soon be in the studio working on a new album, capturing the band’s current electro-punk sound.

Another Lansing fixture, BerT, will perform a set of punk/sludge heaviness. The group has multiple tracks available at its label’s site, www.madlantisrecords.com.

The band’s current lineup is Phillip Clark (bass), Ryan Andrews (guitar/vocals) and Rael Jordan (drums), although the band’s been playing in various forms since the early 2000s.

Also taking the stage are two touring Milwaukee bands. The members  of IfIhadaHiFi describe their sound as “unlistenable cacophony with a dance beat.” The band has toured the country several times and has warmed-up stages for the likes of Jesus Lizard and Archers of Loaf.

Also performing is The Zebras; fans of Jello Biafra-style vocals and caustic art rock at a high volume may want to check them out.

Friday, Aug. 26 @ Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 18 and over. $7, 9 p.m.

Lake Lansing concert hosts Jeff Baldori and Mike Skory

Jeff Baldori is an accomplished Lansing-area musician whose career started in Detroit in the 1960s. As a teen he played with his brother “Boogie” Bob Baldori in The Woolies, which landed a national record contract with Dunhill records in 1966.

This Friday, Jeff Baldori performs a jazzy mix of tunes alongside another local music veteran, Mike Skory, at the Lake Lansing Community Band Shell in Haslett. The duo recorded the “Boogie Burgers” album in 2009, which people can listen to at jeffbaldori.bandcamp.com.

The bandshell is located near the Lake Lansing Park South entrance across from The Watershed Tavern and Grill on Marsh Road.

Friday, Aug. 26 @ Lake Lansing Community Bandshell, 1621 Pike St., Haslett, all ages, FREE, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Nadir brings danceable soul to LeRoy’s

LeRoy’s Classic Bar & Grill hosts Detroit-area guitarist and vocalist Nadir (Jonah Nadir Omowale) and his band on Saturday. Nadir has received rave reviews for his high-energy progressive songs since 2004 when he released his solo debut, “Distorted Soul 2.0.” In 2001, a remix of his track “Slave” was a breakout track on Billboard’s Club Play charts. Nadir’s second full-length, 2008’s “Workin’ For the Man,” combined live and studio tracks.

Saturday, Aug. 27 @ Leroy’s Classic Bar & Grill, 1526 S. Cedar St., Lansing, 21 and over, $5, 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Heavy riffing from Brooklyn duo at Mac’s

The Brooklyn-based Lost Coves combines indie rock with heavy, experimental rock, using just a bass guitar, drums and vocals. On Sunday, the duo plays Mac’s Bar. Known for colossal yet dissonant riffing, these guys prefer shadowy and reverberated wailings over a pop sensibility.

Also ripping through a set is Jackpine Snag, a newer local group that formed in late 2010. The band, which plans to record this fall, calls itself “heavy blues doom.” The three piece is made up of some local rock veterans including Joe Hart (formerly of The Chairmen), as well as Nicholas Merz and Todd Karinen of the now-defunct Mk Ultra Culkin.

Opening the show are Beast in the Field (doom/stoner rock from Mt. Pleasant) and Ozenza, a Grand Rapids-based rock band.

Sunday, Aug. 28 @ Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 18 and over. $5, 9 p.m.
