Wednesday, March 7 — Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents "Moulin Rouge — The Ballet" next Wednesday at the Wharton Center. You can get in the "Moulin" mood with the 2001 Nicole Kidman/Ewan McGregor movie, which screens this weekend at Celebration Cinema Lansing.
Director Baz Luhrman's 2001 musical shows at 11:30 p.m. Friday, 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday. It's part of Celebration's "Cult Classics and Popular Picks" series. The film follows the tragic romance of Chrstian (McGregor), a starry-eyed young writer in Paris, who falls madly in love with cabaret star Satine (Kidman), much to the dismay of Satine's manager (Jim Broadbent) and the ill-tempered duke (Richard Roxburgh) who wants Satine for himself. The adventurous score incorporates a potpourri of pop favorites, including "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Silly Love Songs," "Your Song," "Roxanne," "Nature Boy" and dozens of others. It won Academy Awards for its eye-popping costume design and art direction; Kidman was nominated as best actress.
