Virg is hungry

For more non-motorized transportation routes

Thursday, Oct. 25 — Mayor Virg Bernero really sunk his teeth into a ribbon-cutting ceremony today in celebration of the completion of a new 1.5-mile sidewalk along Waverly Road south of the Grand River.

When the scissors refused to cut the ceremonial red ribbon, he took matters into his own hands — well, mouth. He and other city officials also unveiled a plan to build more pathways in south Lansing.

The plan is to build a new walkable and bikeable pathway connecting Waverly and Martin Luther King Boulevard, as well as converting some of the traffic lanes on Pleasant Grove Road to include bike lanes from Jolly Road to just past West Miller Road.

The project will cost about $636,000, said Andy Kilpatrick, a transportation engineer with the City of Lansing. He said roughly $414,000 will come from federal dollars and the rest will be paid for with local money. The idea is to have the project completed in 2014.
