Thursday, April 4 — What better way to bring in a warm, early spring weekend than with some bright indie and laid-back mellow rock shows? The styles — both homegrown and all the way from Vancouver — make their way to Lansing this weekend through the likes of Hey Ocean and Billiards music.

Hey Ocean at Mac’s Bar

Prolific and friendly with social media, Hey Ocean sums up the distinct style of indie pop coming out of Vancouver — stylized and bright in sound, at least one unusual instrument (Hey Ocean’s lead singer is a flutist) and a lot of whimsical showmanship that includes bright colors and indie fashion sense. The trio — Ashleigh Bell (vocals), David Beckingham (guitar) and Dave Vertesi (bass) — just put out a new album, “Is,” in January, with a spring tour to support it. Thursday will be a single billing show perfect for the lighter-hearted person of any age.

Billiards Music at The Avenue Café

Though far from the California coastline, Billiards Music still rides a wave of laid-back rock and reggae right here in Lansing. Formed in 2006, the group serenades summer living year-round in mid-Michigan, offering up feel-good tracks and good-hearted live shows. For now, Brandon Jo (guitar, vocals), Matt McDaniels (drums) and Pete Rice (bass), are unsigned, though their Sublime-like vocals and mellow guitar tracks have earned them plenty of loyal fans. The musicians themselves are just happy to be doing something they love. Opening for Billiards Music are country rockers Blackburn Killin’.
