Alcohol-free bar opens in Lansing

SUNDAY, March 21 — Lansing has new digs for those looking to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a bar without the social pressures of drinking. Wing Heaven Sports Haven, owned by Teresa Stokes and Ayanna Ballard, is now open at 3812 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. — the former home of Ziggy’s Coney Island.

Stokes said the mission of Wing Heaven Sports Haven is to create a comfortable environment for people in recovery that still want to go out and socialize.

“The point of a sober bar is to create a safe atmosphere for people in recovery as well as the community as a whole who don’t want to be around alcoholic beverages when they’re having a good time,” Stokes said. “They’re not triggered; you don’t even have to buy anything — you can just come in and be safe.”

Helping those in recovery is a major passion of Stokes, who is also the co-founder of the sober living program Pinnacle Recovery Services. She also manages several recovery houses in the Greater Lansing area and works in residential treatment.

“People new to recovery have to change their people, places and things. So, we wanted to help create that for them. You can’t even go to a movie theater these days, because they have alcohol there, “ Stokes said.

Stokes said it was the destructive power of alcoholism and drug abuse in her family that inspired her to get involved. “This is personal,” she said.

Wing Heaven Sports Haven features a full menu of classic fried pub fare, including wings, burgers and fish. And true to its namesake, the bar will also air sports on the televisions, as well as provide patrons with arcade games and pool. Though there is no alcohol served, the bar isn’t exclusively reserved for those in recovery.
