‘Amazing Animals,’ delectable dinners and more

In light of the tragic shooting at Michigan State University Monday evening (Feb. 13), don’t feel pressured to leave your home this weekend if you’re not feeling up for it. Take some time to decompress, relax and take inventory of your feelings.

If you are looking to get out and take your mind off things, though, Greater Lansing has much to offer.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have DownRiver Dan at Eaton Rapids Craft Co. at 7; Ruby John and John Warstler at University United Methodist Church and The Black Rock Sextet featuring Benjamin Hall at UrbanBeat, both at 7:30; Matthew Shannon at The Peanut Barrel and Across the Hall at Mac’s Bar, both at 8; The Louderthans at The Green Door at 8:30; and Avon Bomb at The Exchange at 9. On Saturday evening, we have the Dave Bennett Quartet at Presbyterian Church of Okemos, Travis Faber at Eaton Rapids Craft Co. and Crash Landing at Williamston Roadhouse, all at 7; the Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet with Elden Kelly at UrbanBeat and DJ E-Nyce at Mac’s Bar, both at 8; Medusa at The Green Door at 8:30; and Atomic Annie at The Exchange and Bloody Butterflies, Angel of Mars and Cameo Headlands at The Avenue, both at 9. On Sunday morning, the Dave Bennett Quartet will return to Presbyterian Church of Okemos at 10 to provide music for the church’s jazz worship service, followed by a pancake brunch.

MSU’s Broad Art Museum is temporarily closed, but art enthusiasts can still view MSU Federal Credit Union’s Student Art Exhibit 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at its Headquarters Building 1 and “Working Hands” at the Lansing Art Gallery 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

This weekend’s theater productions include “Misery” at the Riverwalk Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; “Wild Horses” at the Williamston Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; and Peppermint Creek Theatre Co.’s “Daddy Long Legs” at Bestsellers Books & Coffee Co. in Mason 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday

Capital Pro Wrestling is hosting a series of matches 3 p.m. Saturday at The Fledge, sure to be spirited and highly entertaining. Tickets are $13 if you purchase in advance or $15 at the door.

If you don’t feel like cooking, check out Mason Knights of Columbus’ fish fry 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, featuring cod, shrimp, fries or baked potato, mac and cheese, coleslaw, green beans, a dinner roll and dessert; the Curbside Pickup Chicken Dinner at Okemos Masonic Center 3 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, biscuits, coleslaw and homemade pie (orders must be placed in advance by calling 517-775-6356); or the Fasching Dinner Dance 5 p.m. Saturday, with a costume contest, live music and dinner consisting of pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, spätzle, applesauce, bread and butter and black forest cake.

If you do feel like cooking, Bradly’s HG will hold a focaccia baking class 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Make sure to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and have long hair tied back.

Potter Park Zoo is holding an Ice Safari 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with pre-made animal ice carvings as well as live carvings. See animals such as bald eagles, otters, Arctic foxes and snow leopards thriving in their enclosures in the winter weather and learn about conservation from messages attached to the sculptures.

To prepare youngsters for the safari, visit this week’s “Amazing Animals”-themed Sparking Science session at Impression 5 Science Center 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.

The Old Town Commercial Association will host its annual Chocolate Walk 1 to 6 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Register in advance for whichever day you prefer and receive a box to fill with chocolates from various businesses in Old Town.

Finally, venture to Lansing Brewing Co. 1-5 p.m. Saturday for a Winter Warrior Patio Party featuring fire and hoop performances, outdoor grilling, live music from DJ Face, specialty spirits and cocktails, winter beers and a new beer release. The event is restricted to ages 21 and up.
