Williamston artist Mark Chatterley and his daughter, Teagan, have teamed up to present a joint exhibition of sculptures at East Lansing’s (SCENE) Metrospace with the goal of exploring intergenerational joy through a shared passion for ceramic art. The sculptures were made with different firing methods, glazes, sizes and complexity levels, demonstrating changes in sculpting styles over time. Titled “Intuitive Play,” the show blends “a lifetime of shared knowledge into a harmonious whimsy, with layered stories of experiences, growth, bonds, thoughts, feelings and dreams,” according to the artists.
A two-time graduate of Michigan State University, Mark Chatterley has more than 40 years of artistic experience, having shown his work in gallery and museum exhibitions throughout the country and abroad. He primarily creates life-sized, figurative sculptures of both humans and animals.
Also an MSU graduate, with a master's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago, Teagan Chatterley splits her artistic focus between sculpture and design. Inspired by “quirky objects, social interactions, culture and the natural world,” she explores “the division and overlap of form and materiality and the implied emotions within each.”
The exhibit will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Admission to the gallery is free. For more information, visit art.msu.edu/galleries/scene-metrospace.
