Christmas weekend offers live music, decorative displays and more

Posted

Christmas is here, which means many businesses will close their doors for the weekend. However, for those looking for fun happenings to offer a reprieve from “Frosty the Snowman” reruns and small talk with distant relatives, there are a few events in the area that may catch your eye.

At 3 or 8 p.m. Friday, venture out to see the last performances of “A Very Williamston Christmas” at the Williamston Theatre. After having the chance to binge-watch Hallmark Channel’s cheesy holiday movies all month, this parody should be even more hilarious.

Have an art-loving family member in town? “Lighthouses of the Great Lakes,” a series of portraits by legally blind artist David Penfold, is on display at the Hannah Community Center’s Public Art Gallery from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Or, at Saper Galleries and Custom Framing, view four dozen linoleum block prints of dazzling landscapes by artist William Hays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

On Friday evening, Lansing-area musicians will ring in the holidays with live music galore. Celebrate Christmas Tejano-style with Jr Aldaco and the Midwest Allstars, 7 p.m. at The Junction. If Christmas isn’t your thing, perhaps you can celebrate Festivus with Mix Pack at The Green Door at 8:30. At the Peanut Barrel in East Lansing, singer-songwriter Taylor Taylor will serenade audiences beginning at 8 p.m. If you prefer to be the one onstage, try your hand at karaoke at The Avenue at 9 p.m.

Alas, Potter Park Zoo’s Wonderland of Lights has closed in light of the weather forecast. But Turner-Dodge House’s Holiday Open House will welcome guests Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. for those who prefer a warmer attraction.

Take this weekend to show your family and loved ones all that Lansing has to offer. Or, if the coming snowstorm is as bad as it’s predicted to be, feel free to disregard everything I wrote and curl up under a pile of warm blankets in front of the fireplace. Either way, I wish you the best (and merriest) of weekends.
