THURSDAY, June 12 — An upscale Michigan clothier will open in downtown Lansing’s historic Atrium building on Washington Square this summer.
It will be the fifth location for Craig Ryan Fine Clothing, which also has locations in Grand Blanc, Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Birmingham. While some Craig Ryan locations offer women’s clothing, the Lansing location will be “primarily” menswear, the company’s president, Julian Delos Reyes, said today by phone.
While he did not provide a specific opening date, Delos Reyes said the team was “working on the buildout” with a planned opening in July.
Craig Ryan will occupy the same space that was once the home of Smalls men's shop, a downtown Lansing staple for five decades, according to Paul Gentilozzi. Gentilozzi Real Estate owns the Atrium building, 215 Washington Square.
Delos Reyes, who is from the Lansing area and a Michigan State University alumnus, said opening the location “feels almost like coming home.”
“I’ve always kind of had a plan in the back of my mind that it’d be cool to offer what we’ve been able to offer in the rest of the state closer to home,” he said.
Craig Ryan originally opened in 2004 in Grand Blanc before expanding to Northern Michigan. The Birmingham location, its most recent expansion, opened in 2020. The shop is named for its founder, Craig Ryan Kurzeja, who passed away in 2024.
The retailer is the latest to set up shop in the Atrium building, which will be connected to the in-progress Tower on Grand skyscraper by a walkway over Grand Avenue as part of the New Vision Lansing project. Gentilozzi Real Estate is developing the New Vision Lansing project.
“We were drawn to it just from the history, with it being an old Michigan Theatre,” Delos Reyes said of the Atrium. “We thought it was a nice nod to the past, but also a nice bridge to the future with it having the future breezeway to that upcoming development.”
According to its website, Craig Ryan offers custom-tailored shirts, made-to-measure suits and shoes and other accessories.
It will be the second upscale menswear shop in Downtown Lansing. The first, Kositchek's, has been temporarily closed since July after its roof caved in during a storm.
An official announcement of Craig Ryan’s opening in Lansing is expected next week.
