Craig’s Surgery Relief Fund
Craig Doepker has been serving up whiskey shots and PBRs at Mac’s Bar for years. The popular bartender made the Final Five in this year’s Top of the Town contest in both Best Bartender and Best Club DJ categories. But last month, Doepker found out he would need to step away from the bar for a while.
Last month, Doepker had double hernia surgery, which meant at least two weeks off from his post behind the bar. Several community members heard about Doepker’s situation and decided to help him out.
Lansing’s Last Call and Michigan Shirt Works, in collaboration with friends and coworkers, set up a gofundme campaign to help Doepker pay his medical bills and help make up for the lost income while he is recovering. All of the funds raised go directly to Doepker. Contributors can also help by buying a “Craig’s Magical Tragical Mystery Tour” shirt — featuring the mustached bartended riding a unicorn — from Michigan Shirt Works’ web site.
There is no deadline for the campaign. To date, the campaign has raised nearly $1,000 for Doepker’s expenses.
I-Cord EZ Knitter
While entrepreneurship can often seem like a young man’s game, a group of baby boomers are hoping to buck that trend with a new venture, Retro Recreations. Pegg Ainslie, Elizabeth Gibbs, Karl McCormick and Cindy McCormick are the creative minds behind Retro Recreations and its flagship product, the I-Cord EZ Knitter.
An i-cord, in knitting, is made by knitting yarn into a thicker, rope-like tube that can be used for handles, edging or other applications. While not especially difficult, making I-cord by hand can be time consuming.
The I-cord EZ knitter seeks to simplify this process. The device, which is powered by a simple hand crank, automates the process and turns out lengths of i-cord in just a few minutes.
Retro Recreations launched an Indiegogo the campaign last month to fund the initial production of I-Cord EZ Knitters. Campaign hopes to raise $25,000 by May 27, which will be used to offset production costs, patent application fees, marketing and other business expenses. Donation levels range from $5 to $100, and rewards for contributors include various i-cord necklaces. This is a flexible funding campaign, meaning the organizers will receive all money raised, even if the goal is not met.
From Flint: Voices Of A Poisoned City
As the state of Michigan continues to grapple with the Flint water crisis, five MSU student filmmakers went to the troubled city to document the voices of the Flint residents. “From Flint: Voices From A Poisoned City” is a documentary that tells the story from the perspectives of Flint residents and activists working in the city.
The film has already been completed, but the filmmakers have created an Indiegogo campaign to help it reach a larger audience. The campaign hopes to raise $2,000 by July 2, which will cover distribution and marketing costs. This is a flexible funding campaign, meaning the organizers will receive all money raised, even if the goal is not met.
