Elderly Instruments and LCC President Steve Robinson host Play Music on the Porch Day concert

Posted

TUESDAY, Aug. 24 — An eclectic blend of local musicians from different genres is coming to the Herrmann House for a concert in downtown Lansing this week for “Play Music on the Porch Day.”

The annual event — organized through a partnership between Elderly Instruments and Lansing Community College President Steve Robinson — aims to bring back the rootsy communal spirit of Americana music by encouraging folks to band together for a day of playing instruments outdoors. This year’s event will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Herrman House, 520 N. Capitol Ave.

There are no limits on what’s accepted. Whether you’re a solo six-string maestro or you want to put together a jazz trio, you’re invited to participate in Play Music on the Porch Day. Even those who don’t play instruments can come down to relax and enjoy some humble summer tunes.

"I've been playing old-time string band music on the porch with some vaccinated friends for a few months. My first job out of college was working in the catalog department at Elderly Instruments down the street," Robinson said. "Last year, my son's saxophone quartet played on the porch, but we thought we'd get more people involved this year. The Herrmann House porch is actually perfect for small ensemble and acoustic music. We teamed up with the great folks at Elderly Instruments and have eight time slots for people to play. Most of us either work at Elderly or used to work there."
