From a variety of gift sales to Thanksgiving- and Christmas-themed plays, it’s clear the holiday spirit has settled in around Greater Lansing. Beyond holiday events, this weekend offers comedy shows, Michigan State University sports games, a genealogical seminar, a wizardly Lansing Symphony performance and much more.
For Friday evening’s live music, we have nationally touring “one-man symphony” Dixon’s Violin at UrbanBeat at both 7 and 9:30; singer-songwriter Henry Herig at the Peanut Barrel and country/soft-rock duo Deer & Elk at Beggar’s Banquet, both at 8; classic-rock/funk/disco cover band Medusa at the Green Door at 8:30; and party band Atomic Annie at Mash Bar and singer-songwriter Darin Larner Jr. at El Azteco East Lansing, both at 9. Saturday evening, we have Asamu Johnson and the Associates of the Blues at Horrocks Farm Market at 5, the Seth Kalina jazz quartet opening for Afro-Cuban music ensemble Salsa Verde at UrbanBeat at 6, variety cover band Mix Pack at Lansing Brewing Co. at 7, pop/funk/R&B cover band Love Effect at the Green Door at 8:30 and Deer & Elk at El Azteco East Lansing at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m., Americana/bluegrass duo Red Thyme at the Avenue at 7 p.m. and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.
Art displays on view this weekend include the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s fall art show at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; paintings by local artist Emilio Pino at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; the Michigan Made Holiday Exhibition and Market at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; "The Searching Eye: Images of Mid-Century Detroit” at the Library of Michigan, which is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; zentangle-inspired art by local artist Dorothy Hughes Engelman at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday; and "Eye Witness,” “Complex Dreams,” “Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People,” “Freedom in the Automation Age” and “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
If you’d like to get creative yourself, the Lansing Makers Network will host its annual How-To Holiday event noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, featuring a series of stations where attendees can make a variety of gifts for $15 each, from etching wine and pint glasses to building a wooden pirate chest. Additionally, Paint Your Poison will host a winter-themed pallet painting party to benefit the Lansing Fraternal Order of Eagles’ Alzheimer’s fund 3 p.m. Saturday at the Eagles’ space in west Lansing, and Dear Ollie & Co. in downtown Lansing will host an ink swatching workshop 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
It’s another packed weekend of theater, with opening performances of “A Very Williamston Christmas” 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Williamston Theatre and Starlight Dinner Theatre’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Great Royal Goose Chase” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Waverly East Intermediate School, plus closing performances of “Cosplay” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Lansing Community College’s Black Box Theatre, “Urinetown” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverwalk Theatre, the MSU Department of Theatre’s “A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Wharton Center Pasant Theatre and Peppermint Creek Theatre Co.’s “What the Constitution Means to Me” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood.
It's also a busy weekend for MSU sports fans, with a women’s volleyball match 6 p.m. Friday at the Breslin Center, a men’s basketball game 6 p.m. Saturday at the Breslin Center and men’s ice hockey games 7 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday at Munn Ice Arena.
For the kids, Harris Nature Center will host a crow-themed campfire program 7 p.m. Saturday, featuring educational activities, s’mores and a guided walk along the trails.
Shop for STEM-focused toys, books and beyond at Impression 5 Science Center’s adult holiday shopping night, running 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Attendees can try out products with hands-on demonstrations and enjoy festive drinks, live music and complimentary gift wrapping.
All Saints Episcopal Church will hold its monthly Coffeehouse at All Saints 7:30 p.m. Friday, featuring performances by several local musicians. Guests should bring their own snacks and drinks.
Michigan comedians Crystal P., Nick Leydorf and Amaru will perform at the Venue by Eleven 11 Events 8 p.m. Friday, with a DJ to provide entertainment between sets. Dimondale’s Country Creek Reception Hall will also host a 10-set comedy show 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Peace Education Center will hold its annual Alternative Holiday Sale 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at East Lansing’s Edgewood United Church. Folk musician Reggie Harris will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday at a ticketed concert hosted by the Ten Pound Fiddle.
The Presbyterian Church of Okemos will also offer an Alternative Christmas Market 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Food from Bread Bites and Noosh will be available for purchase.
The annual Turkey Trails 5K and 10K runs kick off 9 a.m. Saturday at Burchard Park. There will also be a kids’ fun run for ages 10 and under.
The Michigan Genealogical Council will hold its annual Fall Family History Event 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Library of Michigan, featuring keynote presentations by genealogist Angie Bush on the use of DNA in research and additional presentations by genealogist Kris Rzepczynski on state census records and law reference librarian Eric Kennedy on Michigan legal research.
MSU’s annual Global Festival runs noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the school’s International Center, featuring cultural exhibits, live performances, a Global Gift Shop and other activities “designed to transport you to every corner of the world.”
The Lansing Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire score to “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” accompanied by the film on a large screen in the background, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wharton Center.
The Lansing Liederkranz Club will hold its final German dinner and dance of the year 5 to 10 p.m. Friday. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with live polka music and dancing to follow.
Keys to Manifestation will host its monthly game night 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and Unity Spiritual Center of Lansing will host its monthly euchre and game day noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. Both events welcome participants to bring their favorite games to share, as well as food and beverages.
Lansing Seventh-day Adventist Church’s free community medical clinic, running 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, will offer basic medical screenings, dental care, vision care, women’s health services and health education, all at no cost.
Finally, Michigan poets Isabella Mansfield and Ana Luisa Cardona will be the featured performers at the Lansing Poetry Club’s Copper Chimney Poetry Lounge event 4 p.m. Sunday at East Lansing’s University United Methodist Church. The readings will be followed by an open mic.
