I’ve always enjoyed Good Truckin’ Diner’s fun and tasty breakfast creations, but I struggled to relax within its small confines in REO Town. Recently, though, it relocated to the spacious spot in Old Town most recently occupied by The Creole Burger Bar & Southern Kitchen (which I also enjoyed, rest in peace). I love the new location and the tried-and-true food so much that I’ve gone twice in the last two weeks. Here, we’ll focus on my most recent — and most delicious — visit.
One thing I don’t remember there being at the REO Town location is espresso drinks and other coffee-shop options. There’s nothing I love more than having a fancy coffee with my breakfast when I go out, and it’s rarely an option. I got the cold brew with cold foam, but there are also flavored lattes (I saw something very intriguing about banana and brown sugar) and even matcha.
On to the main event. I went with the Hippie Hangover, but only after much deliberation. From tacos to omelets to sandwiches to sweet stuff, Good Truckin’ is a breakfast lover’s dream, especially if they enjoy riffs on the classics. The Hippie Hangover is like if eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy, and Fleetwood Diner’s Hippie Hash were in a throuple: An open-faced biscuit is topped with two fried eggs, vegan chorizo, broccoli, tomato and red onion, then smothered in mushroom gravy and sprinkled with muenster cheese.
I wasn’t hungover, but I can’t imagine this being any more satisfying than it was. I will say the biscuit, though tasty, was a little dry, but this was more than made up for by the mushroom gravy, which I will be asking for a side of on every future visit. Creamy, tasting of sage and thyme, it was more flavorful than most meat-based gravies and perfectly complemented the slightly spicy, smoky vegan chorizo that left no desire for the real thing.
Alongside this masterpiece was a pile of American fries, which were well seasoned and delectable, especially when dragged through that gravy. We also got a pancake for the table, which was nice and crispy on the outside and pillowy inside. Basically, it was the perfect breakfast. With the new location’s spacious dining room, the availability of drink options other than a cup of black coffee and the eatery’s always-been-good menu, satisfaction was inevitable.
