This weekend offers opportunities to see a new take on the classic Cinderella story, dance the night away to funk and disco music, celebrate the work of Michigan State University master’s of fine art candidates, learn the basics of Wicca, hunt for clues at R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, get down and dirty at Old Town’s Lumberjack Festival and much more.
For Friday evening’s live music, we have the Tomás Esparza Blues Band at UrbanBeat at 7, folk duo Sparky and Rhonda Rucker at East Lansing’s University Lutheran Church at 7:30, ‘80s cover band Miranda & the M-80s at the Green Door at 8:30, and pop band JP & the Energy at Mash Bar at 9. Saturday evening, we have smooth jazz/R&B band AWD at UrbanBeat at 7, variety cover band Collateral Damage at the Green Door at 8:30, and indie-pop singer-songwriter Darcy Moran with indie-rock/shoegaze artist Zora Rooibos and indie-rock group Lee Cleaveland & the Lefthand Band at the Avenue at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is country group Matthew James Adkins Band at Williamston’s St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church at 2 p.m., fingerstyle guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto at the Robin Theatre at 3 p.m. and alt-rock band The Plurals at the Avenue at 7 p.m.
The MSU Broad Art Museum will hold an opening reception for its 2025 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the other exhibits on display, including “Farmland: Food, Justice and Sovereignty,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Echoes of War,” the museum will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Other art displays on view this weekend include mixed-media artist Steph Joy Hogan’s “Scrapscapes” exhibit at the Nelson Gallery in downtown Lansing, which is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; zentangle art by Jenn Groenhof at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Sunday; work in a variety of media by members of the Mid-Michigan Art Guild at Bestsellers Books & Coffee Co. in Mason, which is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday; and a collective exhibit focusing on patterns found in nature at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Ixion Ensemble Theatre wraps up its production of “Broke-ology” this weekend, with final performances 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood. Additionally, MSU Opera Theatre will stage Gioachino Rossini’s “La Cenerentola,” a twist on the classic Cinderella tale, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the school’s Fairchild Theatre, and the Wharton Center will welcome the national tour of “Menopause the Musical 2” 3 p.m. Sunday.
Events for the kids include Charlotte Community Library’s monthly Craft Club 4 p.m. Friday, which will offer an opportunity to paint rocks that look like cacti, and a spring break scavenger hunt at R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, which is available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday with regular admission.
The MSU baseball team will play a three-game series against the University of Illinois this weekend, with matches 3:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at McLane Stadium.
The biweekly TGIF dance party runs 8 p.m. to midnight Friday at Bath’s Hawk Hollow Banquet Center, with an option line dance lesson at 7:15 p.m. A complimentary dinner buffet and cash bar will be available to attendees.
Comedy duo Chad and JT, known for their Netflix series “Chad and JT Go Deep” and their podcast “Going Deep with Chad and JT” as well as playing twins TJ and Chaz on Netflix’s “Unstable,” will perform 8 p.m. Friday at Grewal Hall.
Keys to Manifestation will host a two-day Wicca 101 course noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, billed as “a structured, hands-on introduction to Wicca, rituals and magick.”
Old Town’s sixth annual Lumberjack Festival, running noon to 5 p.m. Saturday on the 1200 block of Turner Street, will feature fan-favorite activities like the feats of strength and facial hair competitions (as well as a “wiskerinas” competition for those unable to grow a beard or mustache), plus live music at UrbanBeat, vendors, street games and plenty of food and beverages for purchase. Attendees must be 21 or older.
Lansing’s Light House Chapel will offer a variety of metaphysical services at its Spirit Energy event, running 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, including astrology readings, reiki aura readings and healings, voice bio analysis and chair massages. Guests can also shop for gemstones, herbs, metaphysical supplies and more.
Finally, Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine will host a funk and disco dance party 9:30 p.m. Saturday to 1:30 a.m. Sunday, with music by DJs Big Sherm, Dirt Room, HRD LKR andMoose. The kitchen will be open during the event for those who work up an appetite.
