Mother’s Day events, outdoor activities, Art Attack! and more

Enjoy the spring weather with farmers markets, an edible plant walk, a soccer match and a community river cleanup. There are also plenty of art exhibits and events, theater productions, a new paranormal museum and a few Mother’s Day celebrations to round out your weekend.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Three Mikes (Mike Daniels, Mike Smalley and Mike Eyia) at Red Cedar Spirits in East Lansing at 7; Taylor Taylor at The Peanut Barrel at 8; Soulstice at The Green Door at 8:30; Repeat, Ghost Pipe and Old Man Trainwreck at The Avenue at 9; and Tony Thompson & Friends at The Exchange at 9:30. Saturday evening, we have Moth Duster at Harrison Roadhouse in East Lansing at 5; Tony Thompson at Ellison Brewing Co. in REO Town, Smooth Street at Williamston Roadhouse, The Swift Brothers at Lansing Brewing Co., Planet D Nonet’s CD release party at UrbanBeat and a tribute concert to Stephen Lange by former members of the Lange Choral Ensemble at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, all at 7; Be Kind Rewind at The Green Door at 8:30; and Twin Stars, THE KB and A Rueful Noise at The Avenue at 9. Finally, Sunday evening, we have the Luke Sittard Trio at Red Cedar Spirits at 6.

Lansing Art Attack! begins Saturday, featuring a variety of art-themed workshops, activities and displays, including a kids’ coloring contest, an artisan market in REO Town, a graffiti spray paint demonstration and a walking tour of painted traffic signal boxes around downtown Lansing. Additional art displays include a collage exhibit, “Wild Florescence,” at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; the Creative Photographers of Mid-Michigan’s “Exploring Our World” showcase at Framer’s Edge, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; the “LGBTQ+ Artist in Michigan” exhibition at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and “Blind Spot,” “DIGEST,” “The Nightly News” and MSU’s Master of Fine Arts Exhibition at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Students from J.W. Sexton High School will perform their spring musical, “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the school’s auditorium. Additional theater performances include “Wicked” at the Wharton Center 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday; “Peter and the Starcatcher” at the Riverwalk Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday; “It’s Only a Play” at Ruhala Performing Arts Center 7 p.m. Saturday; Peppermint Creek Theatre Co.’s original production of “An Incredibly Human Thing” at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and Ixion Theatre Ensemble’s production of “When I Come to Die” at the Lansing Mall 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Soak up the sun while getting your grocery shopping done at the Meridian Township Farmers Market 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Marketplace on the Green in Okemos or the Eastern Ingham Farmers Market 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at McCormick Park in Williamston.

Other outdoor events include an Edible Wild Plants Walk at Harris Nature Center 1 p.m. Saturday, a plant sale at Lee Austin Park in Mason 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and a river cleanup with tree giveaways and free lunch 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Impression 5 Science Center. Those who participate in the cleanup will receive free admission to the science center afterward.

For sports fans, Lansing Common FC will play its first game of the season against Troy United 6 p.m. Saturday at Eastern Stadium, and Lansing Roller Derby will face off against Downriver Roller Dolls and Chicago Style Roller Derby in a doubleheader 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Court One Training Center in East Lansing.

Visit West Windsor United Brethren Church in Dimondale 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for a Family Fun Day, featuring live music, food trucks and booths from local crafters and vendors.

The Otherside Paranormal & Mortuary Science Museum, located within REO Town Marketplace, will have its grand opening 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. The team from Ghost Contact Paranormal will be in attendance, and there will be tarot readings, meet and greets with spooky artists and a live broadcast from The Baron & Sindee Nyte Show.

Finally, celebrate Mother’s Day with a Mommy & Me Tea Party 11 a.m. Saturday at BlackDog Coffee in Eaton Rapids, a brunch at Lansing Brewing Co. 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, a piano concert at Michigan State University’s Fairchild Theatre 3 p.m. Sunday or a day out at Potter Park Zoo, which is offering free admission for all moms 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
