Midtown Brewing Co., 402 S. Washington Square, in downtown Lansing is about to unveil a mural by Lansing artist Nevin Speerbrecker that features 12 pop culture figures mounted on the wall looking out from behind the bar.

The figures on the 4-foot-by-14-foot mural include Tony Soprano, Daenerys from “Game of Thrones,” Marvel’s Luke Cage, Raphael, Jack Sparrow, the Joker, the Riddler and Professor Snape.

Said Speerbrecker (a frequent City Pulse cover contributor), “When you are sitting at the bar looking at them — they are looking at you.”

The mural is mounted on insulation board covered with a canvas throw painted with acrylics and sealed.

MBC owner Shawn Elliott said the mural will be available for view this week.  “The mural is a continuation of embracing all local artists” in his downtown buildings, Elliott said. “We expect to do more of this art.”

Elliott has also restored the Ranney Building designed by Darius Moon in downtown Lansing occupied by Veg Head, which also features murals.

Speerbrecker said he has plans for a sports icon theme in MBC’s restroom area that will depict Lansing and national sports icons.

The artist also has participated in painting themed windows for the Downtown Lansing Inc.’s Silver Bells celebration, Halloween and 517 Day along with painting a traffic control signal box at Grand and Allegan streets featuring Boji Tower and the sun playing a trumpet.
