With the temperature expected to warm up to the mid-to-high 20s, this weekend is the perfect time for those who have been holed up in their homes to embrace the (somewhat) more bearable weather and enjoy quality time in the outside world. From art exhibition openings, a Broadway musical and a slew of concerts to a murder-mystery dinner, a prohibition-themed soiree and a country dance party, plus much more, this weekend’s busy schedule of events is proof that a little cold weather can’t stop the fun in Greater Lansing.
For Friday evening’s live music, we have a Michigan State University student jazz quartet at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at 5:30; Americana/blues/folk singer-songwriter Billy Joe Hunt at Holt’s Summerlands Brewing Co., Grammy-winning folk and country musician Dom Flemons at East Lansing’s University Lutheran Church, and a jazz septet led by saxophonist Walter Blanding performing the music of hard-bop pianist and composer Horace Silver at UrbanBeat, all at 7:30; Main Street Dueling Pianos at Dimondale’s Country Creek Reception Hall at 8; ‘80s rock cover band Miranda & the M-80s at the Green Door at 8:30; and cover band Full House at Mash Bar at 9. Saturday’s live music begins with School of Rock East Lansing at Grewal Hall at 1 p.m. and MSU’s annual “A Celebration of the Beautiful Voice” opera concert at 3 p.m. In the evening, we have funk/pop/R&B band Love Effect at the Irish Pub and Tom Petty tribute band The Insiders at Grewal Hall, both at 8; a ‘90s party with rock band Off the Ledge at the Green Door at 8:30; and a benefit show for Punks with Lunch featuring emo bands Small Parks and Tequila Mockingbird and hardcore-punk band Crying at Work at the Avenue at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is a Lansing Symphony Orchestra violin, oboe and piano trio at the First Presbyterian Church of Lansing at 3 p.m.; “apocalyptic doo-wop trio” Super Secret Cult Band’s album release show, with an opening acoustic set by band members Abbey Hoffman and Michael McConeghy, at the Avenue at 7 p.m.; and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.
MSU’s Broad Art Museum will hold its annual winter opening party 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, offering an opportunity to explore all its exhibitions (“Complex Dreams,” “Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People,” “Freedom in the Automation Age” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Farmland: Food, Justice and Sovereignty”) while enjoying food, music, special guests, art-making activities and more. The museum will also team up with Beal Botanical Garden to host two events on Sunday in conjunction with the “Complex Dreams” exhibition: a tour of the exhibition, led by Beal community and sustainability coordinator Angelica Bajos, at 1 p.m. and a DIY tea blend workshop and conversation on the resilience of people and plants in the African diaspora at 2 p.m.
MSU Federal Credit Union will kick off its annual Student Art Exhibit with a VIP reception 1 p.m. Sunday at its Headquarters Building 1. Parents, students, teachers and art lovers are invited to browse the students’ workwhile enjoying catered food and refreshments.
Other art displays on view this weekend include Quilting Divas’ “Eras of Women in U.S. History” exhibit at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; “Light Through the Darkness” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; and a collection of watercolor, acrylic, collage, fiber, mixed-media and photography work by the Lansing Women Artists Collective at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Theater buffs have a full slate of shows to choose from this weekend, including the Broadway tour of “Shucked” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Wharton Center; Ixion Ensemble Theatre’s production of “She Kills Monsters” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood; and Ruhala Performing Arts Center’s new Broadway music revue, “What I Did for Love,” 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
MSU sports fans will have to choose between seeing the men’s ice hockey game take on the University of Minnesota at Munn Ice Arena and the wrestling team face off against Indiana University at Jenison Field House, both at 7 p.m. Friday. The ice hockey team will play another home game against Minnesota 6 p.m. Saturday, while the wrestling team will return to Jenison for a match against the University of Nebraska 1 p.m. Sunday.
AL!VE health park in Charlotte will offer its weekly story time and parkour workshop 10 a.m. Friday for children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers.
Guests must sign up online in advance to get the password for Looking Glass Brewing Co.’s End of Prohibition Party, running 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The event will feature live music by The Springtails, moonshine seltzer cocktails, a wide selection of beverages on tap and upscale hors d'oeuvres. ‘20s attire is encouraged.
Dorothy Hughes Engelman will give the third presentation of Lansing Park and Recreation’s weekly travelogue series, beginning 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Community Center. In 1966, Engelman’s family hosted a Dutch exchange student, Annie, leading to “a 58-year sistership.” In April, Engelman visited the Netherlands to see Annie’s home, then traveled to Italy and various locations in Ireland.
Okemos pop-up restaurant Red Haven will host another four-course dinner 7 p.m. Friday, highlighting a few of Julia Child’s iconic French recipes: French onion soup, Roquefort turnovers, coq au vin and crème brûlée.
Every Friday night is country night at Lansing Shuffle, beginning with a line-dace lesson at 8 p.m. From 9 p.m. to midnight, guests can dance to modern country music. Drink specials will be available.
UrbanBeat will also host a dance party beginning 10 p.m. Saturday. DJ Dalavey will be spinning Afrobeat, amapiano, Afrocongo, bongo, reggae and dancehall music.
Real Lansing FC, a no-cost soccer club for Lansing School District students, will hold a fundraiser futsal tournament 3 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Don Johnson Fieldhouse. Teams of four players ages 16 and older will compete in a series of matches, receiving three points for a win and one point for a tie. The highest-scoring teams will advance to the semi-final and final rounds. Teams must register online by Saturday.
The Murder Mystery Co.’s mafia-themed murder-mystery event begins 7 p.m. Saturday at UrbanBeat with a dinner buffet, followed by the immersive show. The premise is that participants have been invited to a speakeasy for a wedding between two mafia families. At the wedding, someone is murdered. Guests will all be assigned a suspect role and will work together to unravel the mystery, following clues to uncover who committed the crime.
Finally, visit Lansing Shuffle 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for its weekly family brunch and lunch, featuring free shuffleboard for kids, video game tournaments, cornhole, giant Jenga and two-for-$10 mimosas.
