FRIDAY, Feb. 8 — Multicolor handmade glass artwork of all shapes and function will display for Janice Hironaka’s first exhibition and opening reception.

The retired MSU chemistry teacher took to making glass art from the ground up just under a year ago. The process of making glass art is time consuming — materials for each piece are fired for up to four days in a kiln then assembled afterward over the course of one week.

Hironaka always enjoyed glass art and the process behind it, she said. And the results are stunning — vivid depictions of what Hironaka calls “kinetic balance.”

“I’m hoping when people see it they can see the movement in the pieces; how it flows into the next section and how it’s interspersed within the rectangle,” Hironaka said. “I also strive to make it a balanced piece, so the kinetic energy goes around it and becomes really studying.”

The “sounds” from the exhibition’s title come from a glass wind chime, Hironaka added.

“It’s a large 5-foot-tall wind chime made out of glass pieces. That is actually a participation piece. People add the kinetic energy to move the strands of glass and make a sound,” she said. “I like to include something where the audience can engage with art and be physical.”

For the future, Hironaka hopes to hone her skills as a glassmaker and artist.

“I am so excited about it. I've only done this under a year and I have a show. I’m very grateful and happy.”

All of her pieces will be for sale.
