Voting results we can all celebrate: The 2024 TOTT winners

After what we’ve all been through with the election, “voting” and anything related to it can bring up a lot of emotions — not all positive and/or community building.

But one thing we vote for in Greater Lansing every fall generates a lot more good energy: the City Pulse Top of the Town Contest.

We launched the 2024 edition, the 17th annual, Sept. 11. And now after two rounds of voting over two months and weeks of anticipation, the big moment is here: the winners announcement.

In this issue (and online at lansingcitypulse.com) are the top three you selected in 249 categories, voted on by more than 4,100 of you casting more than 92,000 votes. We thank you, and no doubt the winners do as well.

We followed a “superhero” theme in Dennis Preston’s artwork for this year’s contest, even depicting the presidential candidates in costumes and capes. But today we’re celebrating the heroic efforts of those Greater Lansing businesses and organizations that serve our community every day, as well as the best hangouts, the local arts and fun stuff in the “Whatever” section.

This contest holds a special place for businesses that check multiple boxes, many relatively new establishments reaching a peak in popularity. They include Flour Child Bakery (see breakout story) and Cat Constellation Café, winning or placing in more than a dozen categories each. The Cat Constellation Café — which is relocating from East Lansing to the old Su Casa Boutique location in Old Town — was the winner just once, for Best Wifi Spot. But it took second or third place in a whopping 15 additional categories. Whether it was Best Pet Rescue, Best Coffee Shop (non-Biggby), Best Mocktails, Best Trivia Night or Best Non-Profit Organization, the Café tries (and succeeds) in being a lot of things to a lot of people. Even in the Hangouts section, the Café scored among seniors and students and as both a solo and sober hangout.

As voter Kelsey Dembo said while voting for the Café in the Best Local Attraction for Kids category, “We found a place your kids will love without getting totally overstimulated. But seriously, nothing’s more special than a kitten falling asleep in your little one’s lap.” She also tabbed it for Best Solo Hangout: “You’re never lonely when surrounded by 25 cats.”

You’ll find some restaurants, shops and services are very familiar, having scored well in Top of the Town for many years. Peanut Barrel and Crunchy’s, two East Lansing institutions under the same ownership, won or placed a dozen times between them.

Dagwood’s Tavern & Grill is also in the half-dozen-plus category, with seven placings including Best Burger, Best Fries, Best Dive Bar and Best Spartan Sports Hangout.

Also scoring in four or more categories were Douglas J Salon + MedSpa, Harry’s Place, Horrocks Farm Market, Meat BBQ, Moriarty’s, Olympic Broil, Pincanna, Soup Spoon Café, The Avenue Café, Peanut Barrel, Thrift Witch and UrbanBeat. Many more made it in three categories.

But there are new names, too. Bobcat Bonnie’s, where Clara’s once resided on Michigan Avenue, won Best New Restaurant and Best Mocktails and added two second-place finishes. Arms & Embers Grill and Noosh Afghan Cuisine were other popular new restaurants, while the new event venue Grewal Hall at 224 and the eclectic Homebrew Tabletop Game Lounge were first and third in Best New Business, respectively.

Sixteen of you, we’re proud to say, voted in every … single … category. A few reached out to us to mention favorites. As promised, we will have a drawing soon for prizes for one of those determined voters for slogging through it to the finish.

Rich Colby of Lansing is a big fan of Pablo’s on East Michigan, even though it was affected by the East Michigan Avenue construction. “My family loves to go there,” he said. “Even my picky 9-year-old great-granddaughter can find something good! I really enjoy when they serenade their customers.”

Meanwhile, Dennis Strahle of Eagle vouches for Horrocks, particularly for its beer selection, which was deemed the best of any retail store. “When people from out of town come to visit, they often include a stop there. Their beer selection is well organized and offers many beers by our local and Michigan breweries.  It is fun to shop there to pick out beer cornucopias for friends!”
