Where to ring in the new year in Greater Lansing

Posted

It’s officially the end of the year, so say goodbye to 2022 and hello to 2023 with the many festivities happening throughout the area.

Celebrate the new year one night early with a New Year’s Eve Eve show at 9 p.m. at The Avenue featuring rowdy, local bands Rodeo Boys, Grey Matter, Fat Angry Hens and Foxgrave. For more upbeat, loud tunes, “horrorcore” rap group Simken Heights will tear up the stage at Mac’s Bar at 8 p.m. Fans of mellower music can venture to see Darin Larner Jr. at The Peanut Barrel at 8 p.m. On Saturday evening, New Year’s Eve concerts abound. The Avenue will host Space Dogg Collective and GTG Records, and Hell In A Bucket will perform jam band classics at Mac’s Bar, both at 8. Miranda and the M80s will play at The Green Door beginning at 8:30, and The Knock Offs will take the stage at The Exchange at 9:30. For a more unique experience, try boarding the Michigan Princess to see the Sea Cruisers play. The boat sets sail at 9, returning around 11:30. Finally, if you can beat the post-New Year’s Eve hangover, Dixon’s Violin will perform his stunning, one-man orchestral arrangements at Hilltop Yoga at noon on Sunday.

If your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, hit the ground running with Ten Pound Fiddle’s New Year’s Eve Contra and Square Dance at 6:30 p.m. at the DeWitt Charter Township Community Center. There will be a potluck and a new dancer workshop, so don’t feel like you need to eat dinner or brush up on your dance moves ahead of time. Another New Year’s Eve dance party, TGIF Dinner and Dance at the Hawk Hollow Banquet Center at 8 p.m., offers a light dinner buffet (included with admission) and a bar (cash/credit), so you won’t have to leave the venue for your midnight toasts. PRISM will host a “New Year’s Eve ExDRAGaganza” starting at 10 p.m. at The Junction for the night owls, featuring local drag performers and a dance floor open until 4 a.m.

For those who didn’t get enough holiday cheer last weekend, the Turner-Dodge House’s Holiday Open House will welcome guests Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. The Lansing Holiday Light Show at the Cottonwood Campground, a half-mile, drive-through, music-synced light display, is also open Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.

I can’t fault you if you prefer to watch the ball drop in Times Square from the comfort of your living room, but to me, “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” just doesn’t compare to meeting potential new friends and dancing your heart out at your favorite local bar or venue. Who knows? You may even find someone to be your New Year’s kiss. As always, I wish you the best of weekends and a happy new year.
