A victim who was stabbed Wednesday is now in stable condition in a hospital’s intensive care unit, according to a statement from the East Lansing Police Department, less than 24 hours after police fatally shot another man during the April 15 incident.
The Foster Swift law firm identified the victim as attorney Douglas Mielock and said in a statement to local media that he had been the victim of random violence.
Police said the victim confirmed to police that they did not know the suspect, who police say stabbed the victim. Police have not publicly identified the victim or the man who was shot.
The incident happened in or around a parking lot near Abbot and Lake Lansing Roads around 6 p.m. on April 15. East Lansing Police said they responded to a call for a theft at a business, which escalated into a stabbing and an officer-involved shooting.
East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown said in a news conference on Wednesday that the original call involved a theft from a businesses and there was a second 911 call while officers were en route and that call indicated that a man “approached a second business and stabbed a victim multiple times. Upon arrival at the scene East Lansing Police Department officers encountered the suspect who appeared to have blood on his person and have an object in his hand that appeared to be a weapon. The suspect was observed running toward the officers on the scene. Officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife multiple times but the suspect refused to cooperate. Officers responded to the threat by shooting the suspect.”
Officers were placed on paid administrative leave, Brown said, which is standard. It is not clear how many officers were directly invovled in the shooting.
Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting, which is routine for an officer-involved shooting.
Lt. Rene Gonzales of the Michigan State Police said during the Wednesday news conference that it is a fresh investigation with minimal information and he declined to release further information.
