A fire Saturday night (May 9) tore through the attic of a large apartment building near East Lansing, displacing all 46 residents and destroying the top floor.

The Village is part of the Chandler Crossings apartment complex, likely the largest complex serving Michigan State University students, with more than 1,000 units. It’s just outside of East Lansing in Bath Township, off Chandler Road, and is home to thousands of students, with multiple gyms, pools and other amenities.

“The fire started on the exterior, on a balcony, from careless discarding of smoking materials,” according to the fire department.

The fire went through the attic and reached the third floor but not the others, although the entire building had smoke and water damage, according to the fire department.

No injuries were reported, and displaced residents were given initial shelter options from the apartment complex.

Firefighters from six departments worked for about eight hours on the initial blaze.

Apartment officials organized a relief drive, and by Monday evening, they had gotten enough supplies to call off the request for aid.
