Leprechauns descend on Lansing
With St. Patrick’s Day coming up on Sunday, the Lansing area offers Irish-themed events all weekend to help you celebrate. There’s also a “Shrek” rave, a home and garden show, a Sustainable Fashion Show and much more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have singer-songwriter Two-Faced Wilson at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; blues, rock and country musician Justin Deason at Mash Bar at 7; folk singer-songwriter David Francey at University United Methodist Church at 7:30; Frog and Koop of blues-rock band Frog & the Beeftones at the Peanut Barrel and the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra with the winners of the College of Music’s annual Honors Concert Competition at the Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall, both at 8; and cover band The Reason You Came at Mash Bar at 10. Saturday evening, we have violinist Ray Chen at Cobb Great Hall and the Diego Rivera Quintet performing Rivera’s Day of the Dead-themed suite, “Ofrenda,” at UrbanBeat, both at 7:30; and the bimonthly A Night at the Soul Lounge at the Avenue, rock bands Sean Anthony Sullivanand All Over the Shop at Mac’s Bar and performances of video game-inspired music by MSU students, faculty and guests at the Music Building’s Murray Hall, all at 8. Ending the weekend on Sunday is a duo piano performance of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff at the MSU Music Building’s Cook Recital Hall and MSU’s Wind Symphony and Alumni Band at Cobb Great Hall, both at 3 p.m.; blues band the Further Adventures of FatBoy and JiveTurkey at One North Kitchen and Bar at 4 p.m.; and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.
Art displays on view this weekend include the Lansing Area Printmakers’ Collective’s “A Windfall of Linocuts” exhibition at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; the Lansing Women’s Art Collective’s mixed-media art show at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; Art Scholarship Alert, a juried exhibition of work by Michigan high school students and participants of young-adult special education programs, at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; the 2024 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition, “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “DOOMSCROLLING” and the 2024 Art, Art History, and Design Faculty Triennial at the Michigan State University Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; “Realm of Daydreams – The Wonders of Fantasy Art” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; and the “REDress Project,” a display of 60 red dresses along West Circle Drive on MSU’s campus to highlight the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, which ends Sunday.
MSU wraps up its production of “What if Wilhelmina,” adapted by Department of Theatre faculty member Dionne O’Dell from Joseph Belisle’s children’s book, 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the school’s Arena Theatre. Additionally, Riverwalk Theatre begins its two-weekend run of “Amadeus,” a fictional account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, and The Studio Performing Arts Center will stage “Adventures on Cherry Tree Lane,” a ballet based on the “Mary Poppins” book series, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center.
Events for the kids this weekend include Impression 5’s weekly Sparking Science program 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, which will focus on exploring different textures, and a story reading with free donuts at the Eaton Rapids Area District Library 11 a.m. Saturday.
Pierre’s Bridal will host its 2nd annual Quinceanera Spectacular 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cadillac Room, featuring a fashion show, vendors, music and dancing.
In this week’s Travelogue, 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Community Center, Eric Freedman will discuss his travels to the country of Georgia, spending time in its capital, Tbilisi, and along the Black Sea.
The nationally touring “Shrek” Rave, featuring electronic DJ sets, live performances by “Shrek” characters and “Shrek”-themed games and drinks, will stop at Grewal Hall at 224 8 p.m. Friday.
All Saints Episcopal Church will hold its monthly Coffeehouse at All Saints 7:30 p.m. Friday, featuring musical and spoken-word performances by several local artists. Guests are encouraged to bring a snack or drink to share.
Mike Dombrowski of Eastside Compost will lead a workshop on the basics of home composting 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hunter Park GardenHouse.
Visit Socialight Society in the Lansing Mall 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for the Sistas in Business Mixer, hosted by Grassroots Giving, which will celebrate the contributions and innovations of local Black women entrepreneurs.
Meridian Township will hold a Sustainable Fashion Show 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Meridian Mall, with information booths and vendors selling upcycled and sustainable clothing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, Cristo Rey Community Center will be accepting donations for its clothing bank.
Keys to Manifestation’s monthly Game Night runs 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. All table games are welcome, and guests should bring their own snacks and drinks.
At the same building, Weavers of the Web will hold its monthly Green Man Work Day noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers will help prep decorations and eggs for the Ostara ritual, a celebration of the spring equinox. The event will finish with a shared feast and relaxation time.
The Lansing Liederkranz Club will host a German dinner and dance Saturday evening. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with music and dancing to follow.
Adults can visit Harris Nature Center 7 p.m. Saturday for a Wine in the Woods event, featuring a guided walk through the woods and a campfire with gourmet s’mores. Attendees should bring their own beverages.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lansing will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a service 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, featuring a performance of the specially commissioned hymn “Hope and Blessings,” by Detroit composer Stacey V. Gibbs, plus food, worship, historical education and more.
The Lansing Home & Garden Show runs 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at MSU’s Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, offering garden displays, seminars, local vendors and more.
Finally, St. Patrick’s Day events abound this weekend, starting on Friday evening with Irish balladeers Cahill & Murphy and cover band Time2Play at UrbanBeat at 6:30 and the Grand Ledge Opera House’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration with Irish/folk band Pub Runners and Irish food and drinks at 7:15.
The opera house continues the celebration 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday with live music, food and drinks, plus the Grand Ledge St. Patrick’s Day parade at 2 p.m. on Bridge Street. The Grand Ledge Area District Library will host a pre-parade party at 12:30 p.m., with crafts, a scavenger hunt and a story reading.
Also on Saturday, Celtic-rock band The Lash performs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mash Bar, Lansing’s St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl kicks off at 4 p.m. at Lansing Brewing Co., and folk musician Ben Traverse performs traditional Irish pub songs 7 to 10 p.m. at Lansing Brewing Co.
On Sunday, we have a Kegs and Eggs brunch 10 a.m. to noon at Lansing Brewing Co.; a St. Patrick’s Day party 1 to 4 p.m. at Lansing Brewing Co., featuring Irish pub music, themed cocktails, an exclusive beer flight, the release of a new Irish red beer and more; hourly go-kart races at noon to 7 p.m. at High Caliber Karting and Entertainment in the Meridian Mall, with a free go-kart race awarded to anyone who can beat the resident leprechaun; Celtic band On the Lash 2 to 5 p.m. at Holt’s Gravity Smokehouse; a St. Patrick’s Day dance 5 to 7:45 p.m. at the Michigan Athletic Club, with complimentary soda, cookies and water; Celtic band The Devil You Don’t 6 to 9 p.m. at Lansing Shuffle; and a GTG Records’ Irish and Scottish rock ‘n’ roll celebration 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Avenue, featuring performances by Deer & Elk, Jean Dream, Mad Moon, The Louderthans and more.
