An eclectic weekend of happenings

Greater Lansing will host a slew of diverse shows and events this weekend, including Saturday’s Lansing Bourbon Fest, an exhibit debuting at MSU’s Broad Art Museum, a roller derby …

Kicking off a robust weekend of musical performances in Greater Lansing is Grammy-nominated R&B and indie-soul artist Eric Roberson, who’s set to take over the stage at Grewal Hall at 224 starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

Greater Lansing will host a slew of diverse shows and events this weekend, including Saturday’s Lansing Bourbon Fest, an exhibit debuting at MSU’s Broad Art Museum, a roller derby doubleheader, wrestling bouts at The Fledge, a variety of musical acts and theatrical performances, plus four Friday fish fries.

Friday’s live music docket includes R&B and indie-soul artist Eric Roberson at Grewal Hall at 224 at 6 p.m.; local duo Mike Shuptar and Alec Drachman at Harrison Roadhouse at 6 p.m.; rock group Soul Garden Reinvented at UrbanBeat at 7 p.m.; singer-songwriter Mark Collins at East Lansing’s Peanut Barrel at 8 p.m.; and local cover band Geech at East Lansing’s Mash Bar at 10 p.m. On Saturday, the Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands will feature 10 regional wind ensemble performances at Okemos High School from 9:30 a.m. through 6 p.m; Southern rock duo Blackhawk takes the stage at Grewal Hall at 224 at 6 p.m; cover act The Band Medusa will play at Lansing Brewing Co. at 7 p.m.; Afro-Cuban group Salsa Verde will be at UrbanBeat at 7 p.m., and the Mason Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Covenant Life Community Church at 7 p.m; Main Street Dueling Pianos will take song requests at the Country Creek Reception Hall at 8 p.m.; Michigan-based party band Electric Flower Co starts at The Green Door at 8:30 p.m.; and Afro Rave by DJ Rexyo performs at Green Dot Stables at 10 p.m. On Sunday, we have MSU organist Hae Won Jang at MSU’s Alumni Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m.; Aaron LaVigne with Eric O’Daly and Caila Conklin at Urban Beat starting at 6 p.m.; and Joshua Barton and A Rueful Noise at The Avenue at 7:30 p.m.

The Lansing Area Printmakers’ Collective’s “A Windfall of Linocuts” exhibition, held at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; Art Scholarship Alert, a juried exhibition of work by Michigan high school students at the Lansing Art Gallery, will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; the 2024 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition will debut on Saturday at the MSU Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Other exhibits at the Broad Art Museum include “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “DOOMSCROLLING” and the 2024 Art, Art History, and Design Faculty Triennial. Finally, “Realm of Daydreams – The Wonders of Fantasy Art,” an exhibit at the Art Williamston gallery, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The weekend’s stage productions include two showings of Ixion Ensemble Theatre’s “Pipeline,” by Dominique Morisseau, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Sycamore Creek Church Eastwood; the MSU Department of Theatre’s stage adaptation of the children’s book “What if Wilhelmina” at the Wharton Center on 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, the Williamston Theatre will continue its run of “Maytag Virgin” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, while the ART/5 Exhibition will also be available to view throughout.

Events for kids this weekend include the ‘‘Smelly and Tasty Science’’workshop, the latest entry in the Impression 5 Science Center’s weekly Sparking Science program, where toddlers can immerse themselves in science through hands-on exploration, at 10 a.m. Friday. For youngsters ages of 10 to 13, the Impression Science Center is hosting a screen-printing course at 10 a.m. Saturday.

With Lent in full force, Greater Lansing will host several fish fry events Friday: Cristo Rey Church Fish Fry,5 to 7 p.m.; Knights of Columbus Fish Fry, 4:30 to 7 p.m.; the VFW Post 671 Fish Fry,  4 to 7 p.m.; and Wacousta-DeWitt Masonic Lodge Fundraiser Fish Fry, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

University of Delaware Professor Rudi Mathee will hold a special in-person and live-streamed lecture, ‘‘The History of Alcohol in the Muslim Middle East,’’ 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday at MSU’s International Center.

In this week’s Travelogue, 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Community Center, Dorothy Hughes Engelman will take guests on a journey down the Danube River through central and southeastern Europe.

Saturday’s Lansing Bourbon Fest at the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum will feature over 100 whiskey and bourbon offerings, plus food trucks, vendors, and live music, over three sessions: 1 to 3:30 p.m., 4 to 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 to 10 p.m. 

Lansing Roller Derby returns 4 p.m. Saturday for its second bout of the 2024 season at East Lansing’s Court One Training Center, where fans can watch a doubleheader featuring a Junior Roller Derby scrimmage match and a home-team clash between LRD Purple and LRD Green.

The Wharton Center hosts ‘‘Step Afrika!’’, a performance that blends western and southern African dances with contemporary dance styles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Forever Young Throwback Prom, a night of nostalgic escape at The Studio at 414 in East Lansing, 7 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday, featuring performances by Triple Lindy 80’s Cover Band and D.J. Rock City.

The Midwest Hair Lounge in Mason hosts a designer brunette hair class at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Lansing Brewing Co. will turn its stock house into a 1980s party-themed marketplace on Sunday for the Love Lansing Pop-Up Party, featuring local vendors, food and refreshments from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Finally, Capital Pro Wrestling returns to The Fledge this weekend with five matchups beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday.
