Wednesday, Feb. 23 — Children can learn more about diversity and inclusion through a cultural concert series starting next month.
The East Lansing Hannah Community Center is hosting the series to promote and celebrate diversity on three Saturdays in March and April.
“I’m very excited about the 2022 season of the Children’s Cultural Concert series,” said administrative services coordinator Justin Drwencke. “There is so much diversity in art and music, and this series is one way to bring together children of all ages to gain appreciation of diverse art forms.”
Singer-songwriter Joe Reilly kicks it off March 5. His program, “Let’s Be Inclusive,” celebrates the many forms of diversity through original songs. The performance will emphasize the importance of empathy, tolerance and diversity. Reilly, who is also a social worker, hopes to motivate children to celebrate those themes.
Mariachi singer Gabriel Estrada III, from Grand Rapids, will perform March 19. A performer since a young age, he enjoys representing Mexican culture and music. He considers mariachi to be the heart and soul of Mexico.
Matthew Ball, also known as the “Boogie Woogie Kid,” performs April 9. His program for young families and children uses his blues and boogie-woogie expertise to perform nursery rhymes and songs. Expect to hear boogie-woogie versions of tunes like “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”
All performances are at 11 a.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, East Lansing. Face coverings are required. Socially distanced seating will be in place. The concerts are free to attend, but require pre-registration. Space is limited to 100 attendees. Registration can be done online or by calling the community center at (517) 333-2580, ext. 0.
