Election results: Benson v. James; Lawrence v. Barrett

Early results are showing that the November election for Michigan governor will be between Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and U.S. Rep. John James, with progressive candidates winning some of the most contested races in the country, including a Lansing organizer who is headed for a congressional race in November.

Governor

Benson was leading the Democratic Party primary on early Wednesday morning with 84% of the vote and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson at 15%.

James was leading the Republican field with 46% of the vote with businessman Perry Johnson and former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox trailing with nearly 38% and 13% of the votes.

U.S. Senate

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers won an uncontested Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

Public health official Abdul El-Sayed was winning the contested Democratic primary for Senate with 48% of the vote to U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens’ 46%.

Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out late in the race, had more than 6% of the votes.

Michigan 7th Congressional seat

U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett won his uncontested primary.

Organizer and activist Will Lawrence is the expected winner of the contested Democratic primary against former U.S. Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam and former Ukraine Ambassador Bridget Brink.
