According to the 2012 Census Survey, 20 percent or approximately 93,000 adults in the Greater Lansing area are functionally illiterate or below the third-grade reading level. That means that one in every five people can’t read to their children, can’t read the instructions on a prescription and can’t read well enough to hold most jobs. As a volunteer-run nonprofit, we’ve been fighting this problem directly since 1985. We’ve educated school children, at-risk teens, adults and refugees from 29 countries.

But we need help. For only two hours a week with flexible scheduling, you too can open up a gateway of opportunities for the less fortunate. Our typical program commitment lasts six months. We also take children’s books, office supplies and monetary donations. All donations are tax deductible. For adult tutoring, we have 50 convenient locations around Greater Lansing for volunteering. Feel free to call us about all volunteer opportunities and all the ways you can make a difference in local literacy.
