Mayor ‘fulfilled promise’ to address health-care cost issue, union president says
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 24 — The firefighters union has reversed itself and endorsed Lansing Mayor Andy Schor for a third term, his campaign announced today.
“Lansing Firefighters IAFF Local 421 hereby endorses Andy Schor for reelection as mayor,” Brad Jorae, president of the Lansing Firefighters IAFF Local 421, said, according to a press release issued by the Schor campaign.
“Earlier this year, Local 421 withdrew our endorsement due to concerns regarding retiree health care,” Jorae continued. “Mayor Schor assured us of his commitment to addressing this issue and has fulfilled that promise. Mayor Schor and his team have collaborated with our retirees to develop a resolution that safeguards their benefits and clarifies the situation for the future. The Lansing Firefighters fully support Andy Schor for his reelection campaign.”
Schor and the firefighters settled their differences this month after the union pulled its endorsement in June.
“I truly appreciate the support of our firefighters. From the beginning, I said I would go to work every day with our first responders in mind while focusing on growing our city,” Schor said in his statement.
Schor will face Kelsea Hector Nov. 4 in the General Election.
