No Kings plans for Saturday rallies across Michigan

Dozens of No Kings rallies are planned for Saturday across Michigan, with the focus being on turning out people to vote rather than mass gatherings, organizers said Tuesday.

At least 75 events have been planned in Michigan – with nearby events in Lansing, St. Johns, Charlotte, Owosso and Howell.

Organizer Eliza Sokoli, a student at Oakland Early College and leader of Teen Action Network, said this would be her sixth No Kings rally.

This time it’s narrowly focused on voter turnout and education, a show of practical power after the larger gatherings that showed off the size and scale, Sokoli said, in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

Another organizer, Emily Bush, said she got into the work because her son attended Oxford High School, the site of a deadly 2021 school shooting that left four people dead and other injured.

Bush said people showing up helps to serve as a brake on corruption and out-of-control power, including gun rights.

The rally is technically non-partisan and candidates for office should not be appearing at the rallies, with the exception of elected officials acting in a voter-turnout role.
