Shop REO Town, Old Town and Downtown in less than a 5K (or drive)
Walk 500 miles? How about just 2 miles and cover three of the area’s biggest shopping neighborhoods: Downtown, REO Town and Old Town.
It’s not a walking challenge, necessarily, since parking is free on weekends. But to help promote the new Downtown Day, representatives from Downtown, REO Town and Old Town associations filmed a video of them walking to the tune of 500 Miles earlier this month.
It happened to be during the September heat wave and what was likely the hottest parts of the hottest day of the month.
At the end, they collapsed dramatically on the video. But they didn’t walk anywhere near 500 miles; they didn’t have to. The neighborhoods are a lot closer together than you may think.
The tune was “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” by The Proclaimers, and their video, showing them marching with knees up high, was a social media hit.
It’s part of an increased effort to coordinate the three shopping districts — which are about 2 miles apart, depending on where you want to start or finish.
This weekend is Downtown Day, a celebration of Lansing’s three unique districts, Downtown, Old Town and REO Town, and the businesses, history and people that make each one special.
Use a Downtown Day shopping passport and buy something at participating businesses for a chance to win a prize.
