Where to cool off during heat wave

Lansing’s public buildings and community centers are some of the places people can use to cool off during the hottest parts of the day, as one of the year’s first major heat snaps is here after weeks of mild temperatures.

With forecasts expected into the mid-90s this week, the city of Lansing is pushing out notices that residents can seek relief from extreme heat at Capital Area District Libraries Lansing branches, CATA, and other air-conditioned public spaces during their regular open hours. Here are the updates from the city:

UPDATED SCHEDULE FOR MONDAY, JUNE 29, THROUGH FRIDAY, JULY 3:

LANSING, Mich. – Mayor Andy Schor, in consultation with the Lansing Fire Department’s Emergency Management Division and the Department of Human Relations & Community Services (HRCS), is activating the city’s Code Red extreme heat weather plan. Implementation of this policy will be in effect starting Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2 from 8:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. each day.

The City of Lansing has several cooling centers open for people to seek relief during the hottest parts of the day. Lansing’s four community centers and the Lansing City Hall are open the following hours this week:

Families looking to beat the heat can also visit the Hunter Park Pool to take a swim and cool off. In addition, Ingham County offers Hawk Island County Park on the city’s southside, which includes a beach and splash pad.

Open daily: 8:00 a.m. – sunset

Unhoused residents have several additional daytime cooling center shelter options available to them. Daytime hours are being offered at the locations listed below. 

  • Advent House Ministries, 743 N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., 517-485-4722, will open their drop-in day center each day from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • The Lansing Nest, 332 Townsend St, downtown Lansing, is open each day from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Call 517-940-6106 or visit thelansingnest.org for information.
  • City Rescue Mission Women & Children Center, 2216 S Cedar St, and the men’s shelter on Kalamazoo Street will be open for nighttime shelter guests only each day.
  • City Rescue Mission Drop-In Center, 415 Kalamazoo Street, will be open overnight each weekday starting at 4:00 p.m., and on Saturday & Sunday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Phone: 517-485-0145

As the heat and humidity sets in, Lansing residents, specifically young children and the elderly, are encouraged to take precautions to keep themselves safe. Remember to:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
  • Limit outdoor activities to the morning or evening, when temperatures cool down. 
  • Wear lightweight, bright clothes. 
  • Apply sunscreen regularly. 
  • Spend more time indoors or spaces with air conditioning. 
  • Check on the wellbeing of vulnerable neighbors, friends and family members. 
  • Avoid keeping pets outside for extended amounts of time, and keep their paws off hot pavement. 
  • Look for the signs of heat-related illnesses. If symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, increased sweating, fever, dizziness or weakness occur, find an air-conditioned space immediately, increase your fluid intake, and call 9-1-1.

Cooling Centers offer Tri-County residents a place to go to escape the heat for at least a few hours a day. This is especially important for seniors and people with chronic health conditions. Cooling Centers are only open when weather is dangerously hot. 

Hot Weather Safety To-Do List

  • Check on neighbors or family members without air conditioning who may have a hard time getting out of their home.
  • Make sure pets have plenty of water and a cool place to rest.
  • Take care of yourself by avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and by spending at least a few hours a day in a cool place.
