Welcome to City Pulse’s inaugural Kids and Teens Issue, with a huge focus on youth art.
We’re bringing you dozens of works by young artists from a handful of Lansing School District schools.
This is our first time, and the first time being published for many of these students, so show everyone how much you appreciate young artists at a time when they are ripe to thrive.
We want to keep highlighting these and other young artists year-round.
* Talk about their art
* Support art programs
* Cut out your favorite pictures and put them on the fridge
* Visit lansingcitypulse.com to see these artworks even larger
* Share these online and in person
Please tell us what you’d like to see in next year’s Kids and Teens Issue —

Eastern High School
Eastern High School aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
Students produce visual journals to support, inform, develop and refine their studio work through sustained visual and critical investigation.
Students are expected to be self-driven and can determine their individual course of study, including content, media and subject matter. All Eastern High School art courses are meant to broaden the student’s overall perspectives as well as personal development of identity and place.

Wexford Montessori Academy
Wexford Academy middle years students have spent the spring semester exploring expressionism, impressionism and perspective. With the guidance of teacher Amanda, students studied influential artists while building their skills and confidence, creating thoughtful, authentic work along the way.
Inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, students experimented with mixed media using colored pencils, oil pastels, paint and cardboard. They worked collaboratively to create bold, expressive pieces filled with color, symbols and personal messages for their community, pushing one another to think both critically and creatively.
After learning about Mary Cassatt and impressionism, students painted their own land- and waterscapes by capturing light, color and everyday moments to reflect who they are as artists.
Students also explored perspective through watercolor paintings and by imagining places they hope to visit or experience in the future, from Disneyland and Tokyo to ancient Greece and Mecca. It was exciting to see the range of ideas and imagination in these pieces as students continued to grow their skills and confidence.

Everett High School
Students in the Visual and Performing Arts program at Lansing’s Everett High School have explored a wide range of styles and media this year, including photography, digital collage and comics. In Room 141, Ms. Schumacher Wills encourages students to connect their everyday experiences with visual composition and design principles. Each project goes through peer critiques and multiple revisions, emphasizing growth and reflection. Art survey classes introduce students to materials and techniques so they can explore a variety of art that they can connect with. Throughout the course, the creative process is valued just as much as the final product.

Gardner International Magnet School
Gardner International Magnet’s K-8 students have been working on a variety of styles and mediums this year, including plaster of paris and India ink. Mrs. Kaliher, their teacher, has helped students to create art that reflects the experiences of students from a variety of backgrounds. From directed drawing to process art, students can have their talents be seen and valued.
