Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Lansing

A 29-year-old man was shot and killed by Lansing Police Department officers early Wednesday (Sept. 23, 2026) morning after he aimed a gun at police, according to a statement by the department.

Officers were called to the 600 block of E. Jolly Road for reports of a man armed with a handgun who was banging on doors and windows. The man threatened to shoot himself or officers when they spoke to him, according to the statement.

“Officers then attempted to use less-lethal force and deployed a Taser,” according to police. “The man ran from officers before turning around and pointing his firearm at them. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Jolly Road is under construction at that point and difficult to access, the area includes several apartment buildings as well as a strip mall. A statement from the police department did not indicate which buildings are believed to have been knocked on, prompting the 911 calls.

No residents at the complex or police officers were injured, according to police. A firearm was recovered.

The shooting will be investigated by the Michigan State Police, according to LPD policy. The State Police have custody of evidence related to the shooting.

Any of the officers who were involved will be on administrative duty until police can establish which officers were witnesses and which ones were involved.

The police department plans to release “relevant video footage at a later date when appropriate.”
