FRIDAY, Feb. 1 — Hear songwriter Charlie Richardson and his band bring the rhythm and twang of jazz, country and blues originals to Old Town.

“A jackalope is a hybrid of odd animals and our sound is like that also. We keep it eclectic because it is interesting that way,” Richardson said.

Backing up Richardson will be saxophonist and drummer David Stowe and bassist Mike Lawrence.

It will be the band’s first gig at UrbanBeat.

“It is nice to play a place that will be focused on the band — not just providing background noise,” Richardson said. “The other thing that is exciting about UrbanBeat is that it’s in Old Town — a place developing for the area of the arts. We see ourselves fitting in because we are creators too.”

Richardson grew up in a family that loved music and began songwriting in college. Though he worked a full career in the energy efficiency industry, he always was drawn back to music.

“In the early days, I wrote a lot about love songs. But I realized it kind of gets boring after the fifth or sixth in a row.”

Storytelling is the main focus of his songwriting today, he said.

“The story sometimes is veiled inside the material. Maybe it is about one thing or as symbolic as something else. Sometimes I write a song to be mysterious that way.”

Jackalope, which released the full length album “I Herd Sounds” in 2014, will also perform select covers from Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor and Guy Clark as well.
