A leisurely post-holiday weekend

Posted

The new year is still ramping up, meaning this weekend is a little less busy than those to come, but Lansing-area residents looking to spend a day or evening out on the town can enjoy a range of concerts, from Motown hits to hip-hop, as well as dances, a euchre tournament, a Punk Prom and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have guitarist and songwriter Matthew Shannon at Harrison Roadhouse at 6, ‘60s cover group Z Collective playing Motown hits at UrbanBeat at 7:30 and a duo of members from indie-folk band the Dangling Participles at the Peanut Barrel at 8. Saturday evening, we have rock, country and blues group Dr. Fab and the Off the Couch Band at UrbanBeat at 7 and A Night at the Soul Lounge at the Avenue at 9, featuring live hip-hop and soul performances, DJ sets and more. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Freddie Cunningham and the Johnny D Blues Band at the Junction at 4 p.m. and country and folk bands Deer & Elk and Wilderhoney, composed of two members from the Wild Honey Collective, at the Avenue at 7 p.m.

The Michigan State University Broad Art Museum is hosting a Family Day 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring free hands-on activities and crafts, as well as a museum tour 1 p.m. Sunday, focusing on the building’s architecture. While you’re at the museum, make sure to check out the exhibitions on display, including “As we dwell in the fold,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights.”

Other art displays on view this weekend include late local artist and former Michigan State University Professor Lawrence French Holbrook’s digital art at Old Town’s MICA Gallery, which is open noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, and “Colors of Celebration: An Artistic Tribute to Global Holidays” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Kids ages 5 to 11 can attend a Marvelous Machines-themed day camp 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Impression 5 Science Center, where they’ll deconstruct and create simple machines to solve problems and complete challenges.

The Punk Art Collective, a local arts and crafts club, is hosting a Punk Prom 9 p.m. Friday at the Avenue, featuring karaoke, vendors and free crafts. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best punk prom attire for the chance to be crowned prom queen, king or lord.

Unity Spiritual Center of Lansing will host its monthly euchre tournament 7 p.m. Friday, with an optional potluck at 6:30 p.m.

If you’re in the mood to dance, the Junction is hosting a country dance party 7:30 p.m. Friday, and the Ten Pound Fiddle will hold its biweekly Contra & Square Dance 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church. Both events will begin with an optional dance lesson.

Finally, Lansing Roller Derby is holding orientations for its kids’ basic skills boot camp 3 p.m. Sunday and its adult basic skills boot camp 5 p.m. Sunday at Court One Training Center in East Lansing. Both courses will run for 10 weeks, with twice-weekly practices.

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you the best of weekends.
