A lively long weekend

Monday is Memorial Day, meaning many readers likely have a long weekend ahead. There are plenty of art exhibits, concerts, farmers markets, film screenings and even a three-day fiesta to enjoy on your days off, and there are also parades and tributes throughout the weekend to celebrate the holiday and honor members of the military who died while serving.

 For Friday evening’s live music, we have a performance of French music and poems at Michigan State University’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at 5:30; North of Five at Harrison Roadhouse in East Lansing at 6; Darin Larner Jr. at Lansing Brewing Co, Stuart Campbell & Friends with Cody Wilson at Eaglemonk Pub and Brewery and a quartet of local jazz musicians at Red Cedar Spirits in East Lansing, all at 7; Matthew Shannon at The Peanut Barrel and the Orquesta Ritmo Project at UrbanBeat, both at 8; and Mix Pack at The Green Door at 8:30. Saturday evening, we have Showdown at Williamston Roadhouse at 7; The Corzo Effect at The Green Door at 8:30; and Darin Larner Jr. at Moriarty’s Pub and A Night at the Soul Lounge at The Avenue, both at 9. In addition, Off The Ledge will perform at The Exchange 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Wrapping up the weekend is Red Cedar Spirits’ Sunday Jazz show from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring Vincent Chandler on trombone, Randy Napoleon on guitar and Noah Jackson on bass.

“Wicked’s” run at the Wharton Center wraps up this weekend, with final performances 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Additionally, “Alabaster” continues at the Williamston Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

This is the final weekend to view three art exhibitions around town: local artist Jill Campbell-Mason’s solo exhibit at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; the Creative Photographers of Mid-Michigan’s “Exploring Our World” showcase at Framer’s Edge, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; and “The Nightly News” at MSU’s Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Other art displays include “Blind Spot” and “DIGEST” at the Broad; “Wild Florescence,” at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; and “The LGBTQ+ Artist in Michigan” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

For even more art, students in fourth through 12th grade can visit the Charlotte Community Library 4 p.m. Friday for its monthly Craft Club and make friendship plants.

For local produce, meat, baked goods and other grocery staples, visit the  Stockbridge Open Air Market 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Stockbridge’s Town Square, the Market on the Grand 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Jaycee Park in Grand Ledge, the Westside Lansing Farmers Market 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Missionary Baptist Church, the Holt Farmers Market 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its year-round location on North Cedar Street, the Meridian Township Farmers Market 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Marketplace on the Green in Okemos or the Eastern Ingham Farmers Market 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at McCormick Park in Williamston. 

Bring your cars, trucks, bikes and anything else with wheels to the Holt Farmers Market parking lot 5 to 8 p.m. Friday for the weekly Cruise to Holt, where you can show off your ride and take a look at other community members’ unique vehicles.

Abrams Planetarium is holding final showings of its May feature film, “Wayfinders: Waves, Winds & Stars,” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. It will also show its May children’s film, “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure,” 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Visit Lansing Makers Network on Alpha Access Street 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for a Makers’ Material Market, where local makers will be selling and trading tools and extra materials. There will also be demonstrations, tours of the space, make-and-take activities and food by From Scratch Food Truck.

Cristo Rey Church’s annual Cristo Rey Fiesta is 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, featuring authentic Mexican food, live music, dance performances, a market, a raffle and more. Members of the military and veterans are invited to attend the festival Sunday for a pre-Memorial Day tribute to those who have served and are currently serving.

Other Memorial Day events include a parade on Grand Ledge’s Bridge Street 11 a.m. Saturday; a parade in Watertown Charter Township 11 a.m. Saturday, with a pre-parade bike-and-scooter-decorating event 10 a.m. at the township’s office; Meridian Township’s Memorial Day Tribute 11 a.m. Monday at Glendale Cemetery in Okemos; and Holt’s parade 1 p.m. Monday, which begins at 4025 Holt Road and ends at the Delhi Veterans Memorial Gardens.
