Why is physical fitness important in your life?

I believe that fitness is as important to a healthy lifestyle as the food you eat and the water you drink. I want to not just add years to my life, but life to my years. I think it is important to be both mentally and physically fit. My fitness routine gives me the energy and endorphins needed to balance a healthy relationship with my two active boys, my career and my social life. I tend to refer to my workouts as my “happy place.” Exercise helps me to manage stress and gives me a healthy outlet.

Describe your fitness routine:

I exercise five or six days a week. I was an active runner and have raced in five marathons, multiple half marathons and varying distances of triathlons. In the last year, I have taken up CrossFit and even compete in CrossFit competitions. My exercise routine can include anything from strength training, kettlebells, high intensity intervals, yoga, running, biking or swimming. I am a member at Spartan CrossFit, ODP Fitness and Williamston Barbell Club, but I also love to take my fitness outdoors. In April, I started a local running group called S.W.A.T.T. Team (Sprinters, Walkers And Trash Talkers). We meet once a week to work on speed, hills and interval training.

How do you stay motivated to maintain your fitness?

I look at fitness like brushing my teeth: It isn’t optional but a part of my daily routine. I also have a great support system around me to keep me motivated. Some of my greatest friendships have been forged out of common interest in physical activity, so my awesome friends and coworkers help keep me motivated. I constantly vary my routine, so boredom is never an option.
