TUESDAY, AUG. 28 — Local entrepreneurs looking to dip their toes into the lucrative waters of online sales only have a few more days to sign up for a recent partnership between eBay and the city of Lansing.
Mayor Andy Schor announced today an extended deadline for businesses to sign up for the latest installment of eBay’s “Retail Revival” initiative. More than 60 businesses have jumped at the opportunity since the partnership was announced earlier this month. Applications will now be accepted through Friday.
“We are extending the deadline for applications to ensure that as many local businesses as possible have the opportunity to learn about the benefits and to apply to be a part of this transformation program,” Schor said.
Officials at eBay earlier this month selected Lansing to follow Akron, Ohio, as the second city to be named for the marketing initiative. The 12-month, business-boosting partnership aims to merge more than 100 small businesses onto a single webpage that would allow billions worldwide to shop for locally sold products.
“This will afford small businesses with an online presence or platform that they otherwise might not have now,” Schor said previously. “It’ll allow them to market their products not only to Lansing residents but a much wider audience around the world. I think it’s going to be a great tool. There’s a lot of potential here.”
Selected businesses — at no initial cost — will be able to receive ongoing support and resources to get started and grow within the online platform with training programs, one-on-one coaching, access to a customer service team and more. Participants will likely need to pay monthly subscription fees beyond the trial period.
Lansing-based businesses need to identify online sales as part of their growth strategy, offer a variety of products and demonstrate a "commitment and readiness to grow" their business.
