Dear Mr. Shuldiner

Dear Mr. Shuldiner,

I am writing to express the sadness and anger felt by the students, staff, and parents of Lansing following the recent shootings that have claimed the lives of our fellow students Jaquez Moye-Young and Kylete Owens. These tragedies have deeply shaken our school communities, and the lack of public empathy from our superintendent is both agitating and unacceptable.

Following the death of Jaquez, the lack of a public response or simple acknowledgement from yourself or anyone at the LSD did nothing but tell the students and staff that they were unsupported and overlooked. Upon hearing from my friends how devastated everyone was the day after the shooting and how angry students and staff were due to the lack of support being shown in any capacity, I too was upset.

In times of such heartache, it is crucial for the community to see and hear their leaders offering their support, acknowledging the pain, and outlining a clear plan of action to prevent further tragedies. I’m aware that you made an appearance at Eastern in response to Jaquez’ death, however due to the fact that Jaquez was not solely known at Eastern, that is nowhere near enough to show the community your support. The community needs to hear from you – our superintendent – how you plan to address these incidents and ensure our safety moving forward.

At this time, I ask that you give a public statement acknowledging the tragedies and expressing solidarity with the students, staff, and families affected, and that you announce a detailed plan of action outlining the steps the district will take to both prevent future violence within the youth and support the students who are affected by it.

I would like to remind you that your leadership is critical in these moments. We need to know that you stand with us and are committed to taking the necessary actions to make our schools safe. The students, staff, and parents of Lansing deserve to feel heard.

My hope is that you take my words into consideration and see my email as an opportunity given to you by one of your students to make yourself right within the community you serve. Thank you for your immediate attention to this urgent matter, and I look forward to your response and visible action.

 Sincerely,

Xavier McKissic
