Fortnight Film Contest highlights local filmmakers

Film festivals usually try to bring their audiences the newest in movies. But the Capital City Film Fest is taking it a step further, showcasing movies that were made less than a month ago.

The festival’s annual Fortnight Film Contest gives participants two weeks to create and submit an original short film, with cash prizes available for the top entries.

Dominic Cochran, co-founder of the festival, said the contest was created as a way to spotlight local artists.

“We just wanted to take a different approach and really give back, especially to local and Michigan filmmakers,” Cochran said.

Once all submissions are entered, they are viewed and ranked by festival volunteers. The top 12 films will be screened Sunday morning, and winners will be announced at the screening. Another 10 submissions will be screened Sunday afternoon.

“Part of the reason we started the whole film festival was to show our members and people of Lansing the amazing work that’s happening all around the world and inspire them,” Cochran said.

Winners will receive a combined total of $5,000; the top prize will receive $2,500 cash. Other prize categories include Top Three, Honorable Mentions, Audience Choice and Staff Pick. Audience Choice is judged by decibel meter at the Sunday screening.

Cochran said the contestants are free to take the films to the other festivals and platforms after the Capital City Film Festival.

“You’d be shocked how awesome the films are,” Cochran said. “When you have two weeks, you can actually make something really cool.”
