Last chance to see some of Lansing’s best holiday attractions

Posted

It’s the weekend before Christmas and all through the town events are happening that will soon close down.

Starting off a weekend of holiday concerts is the 10th annual “Evening of Lessons and Carols,” 7 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church of Okemos, featuring the PCO Chancel and Handbell Choirs and a brass ensemble and singers from the MSU College of Music. Saturday brings the MSU Professors of Jazz to the Fairchild Theatre at 8 p.m. for “A Jazzy Little Christmas,” featuring guest jazz vocalists Tyreek McDole and Rockelle Fortin. The Lange Choral Ensemble’s “Heaven and Earth Are Full of Your Music,” 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will end the weekend with a selection of Advent and Christmas arrangements.

It’s the last weekend for “A Year with Frog and Toad” at the Riverwalk Theatre, which City Pulse’s Todd Heywood highly recommends (read his review here), at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. “Pretty Woman – The Musical,” based on the beloved romantic comedy from 1990, is at the Wharton Center, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The Williamston Theatre’s “A Very Williamston Christmas” continues this week, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Finally, Lansing’s Audio Air Force will present the live radio version of “It’s a Wonderful Life” on 7 p.m. Friday — perfect for podcast lovers and theater fans alike. The group has written a few original audio plays it will perform as well.

Though the first floor of the “Zaha Hadid Design: Untold” exhibit at the MSU Broad Art Museum will remain through Feb. 12, the second-floor portion will close at the end of the day Sunday. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, so don’t miss out on seeing stunning designs from the woman who created the building itself. If paintings are more your speed, “Lighthouses of the Great Lakes,” a series of portraits by legally blind artist David V. Penfold, is on display at the Hannah Community Center’s Public Art Gallery in East Lansing. Gallery hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

If you haven’t been out to see Holiday Nights of Lights at Lansing’s Frances Park, this weekend is your last chance. Grab the family for this drive-through light display taking place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Another brilliant light display, Potter Park Zoo’s Wonderland of Lights, continues this weekend from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Opening on Saturday is the Turner-Dodge House’s Holiday Open House, with all three floors of the historic mansion decorated for the holidays. The house is open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

With Christmas and New Year’s Eve coming up, this weekend may be your last chance to enjoy all the holiday events that Lansing has to offer before traveling and family get-togethers take over. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you thoroughly enjoy it. As always, I wish you the best of weekends.
