Shop, game and be merry

From pop-up art shops and the grand opening of a new popcorn store to a book and bake sale and a free book giveaway, you may want to clear space in your home prior to this weekend’s events. There are also plenty of live shows, art exhibitions, board game meetups and even a health and wellness conference for Lansing-area residents to enjoy.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Moth Duster at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; Jeff Baldori at Lake Lansing Park South and The Rotations at Red Cedar Spirits, both at 7; Orquesta Ritmo at Urbanbeat, North of Five at The Peanut Barrel and Damnit Sam at Lansing Shuffle, all at 8; and the Corzo Effect at The Green Door and False Harbor, Soccer, Lucas Powell and Sleeping Villains at The Avenue, both at 9. Saturday evening, we have the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame Induction Show, a two-hour concert taking guests through decades of popular country music, at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center at 7 and the Gina Garner Band at The Green Door at 9. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Frendz at University Lutheran Church and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show, both at 6 p.m.

Michigan State University’s Broad Art Museum is opening a new exhibition on Saturday, “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights,” which “explores the shared values between artists and athletes in the advancement of social-justice-related issues.” “Shouldn’t You Be Working? 100 Years of Working from Home” and “As we dwell in the fold” will also be on display at the museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Additional art displays on view this weekend include “Let the Paintings Talk” at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday; Brian Snyder’s “The Journey Continues: American Aboriginal Art” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; En Plein Air’s “Alluring Nature” at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; “Photography: NOW!” at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center on West Maple Street, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; Joel Ellis’ oil and acrylic paintings at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; and “Color Me Plaster,” by Yvette Robinson, at the Hannah Community Center’s Public Art Gallery, which is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

If you’re looking to purchase some art, the Lansing Art Gallery is holding outdoor pop-up shops 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, featuring work by a variety of Michigan artists. Nature-inspired watercolor and mixed-media artist Michelle Detering will visit noon to 2 p.m. Friday, and jewelry maker Jim Davis will visit noon to 2 p.m. Saturday to showcase their art and talk with attendees.

If you’d like to make some art of your own, the Grand Ledge District Library is handing out Japanese koinobori craft kits 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday while supplies last.

The Williamston Theatre ends its run of “Be Here Now” this weekend, with final performances 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

For the kids, Higher Ground Community Development Center is hosting a School’s In event 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring vision, dental, hearing and lead-poisoning checks by the Ingham County Health Department and Sparrow Mobile Clinic as well as backpack and school supply giveaways. Additionally, Paint Your Poison is hosting a sea-themed painting workshop 3 p.m. Sunday at High Caliber Karting and Entertainment in the Meridian Mall, featuring photo opportunities and one-on-one time with special guest Molly the Mermaid. A small snack and juice box will be provided.

If you’re in the mood to play some games, Keys to Manifestation is holding its monthly Game Night 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Unity Spiritual Center of Lansing is holding its monthly Euchre and Games event noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, and the Haslett Library is hosting a drop-in board game afternoon 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The 517 Health & Wellness Weekend, hosted by Ourspace (517), features a Holistic Workshop & Yoga class 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at One Love Global on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and a “Harmony of Health” conference 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Robin Theatre. Saturday’s Conference will touch on three themes: “Habits for Healthy Outcomes” from 9 to 10 a.m., “Keys to Holistic Health” from 10 to 11 a.m. and “Creating a Wealth Mindset” from 11 a.m. to noon. Afterward, the Capital Area Housing Partnership will lead a conversation about home ownership, and Astera Credit Union will lead a conversation about the power of credit. Visit the Delta Township District Library 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday or 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for a Book and Bake Sale, featuring books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, homemade baked goods and more for purchase. All proceeds benefit library programs.

The Reading People is also hosting a free book giveaway 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at its location on Saginaw Street. Attendees can take as many books as they’d like.

The Future of Comedy Show makes its return to Spare Time Entertainment Center 7 p.m. Saturday, with performances by nationally touring headliner Mike Ball, J Bell from Kevin Hart’s “Hart of the City” and regulars Dave Wellfare and Steve Kaz.

Finally, Jackson Popcorn Depot is opening a second location at the Meridian Mall, and it’s celebrating with a day of festivities beginning 11 a.m. Saturday, including free popcorn samples and product giveaways. The shop offers items for those who enjoy both sweet and savory food, including a plethora of popcorn flavors, chocolates, candy and more.
