Theater is back, new art exhibits and more

What’s going on in Greater Lansing this weekend? Read on to find out!

For Friday evening’s live music, we have The Swift Brothers at Horrocks Beer Garden at 5; Tejano sound at The Junction and DJ E-Nyce at Eaton Rapids Craft Co. at 7; Deacon Earl at The Peanut Barrel, the Briggs Schmidt-Swartz Duo at MSU College of Music’s Cook Recital Hall, guitarist Bruce Forman with MSU jazz orchestras at MSU’s Fairchild Theatre and Repeat, No Skull and Dropped at Birth at Mac’s Bar at 8; and Soulstice at The Green Door at 8:30. Saturday evening, we have Darin Larner Jr. at One North Kitchen & Bar at 6:30; Kurt Stone at Eaton Rapids Craft Co., Atomic Annie at Lansing Brewing Co. and Showdown at the Williamston Roadhouse at 7; Salsa Verde at UrbanBeat at 8; Gina Garner & the All Night Long Band at The Green Door at 8:30; and Lo Dazz, Xotrey and PRXF7 at The Avenue at 9. Additionally, The New Rule will play at Classic Pub & Grill both Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Finishing off the weekend is Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s Winterlude concert at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Sunday at 3 p.m.

“Blind Spot,” the MSU Broad Art Museum’s new exhibition, will have its opening reception Friday at 7 p.m. Meet the artist, Stephanie Syjuco, and get a first look at her unique creations. “Zaha Hadid Design: Untold” is also on display at the Broad Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., “Working Hands” is on display at the Lansing Art Gallery Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and MSU Federal Credit Union’s Student Art Exhibit, featuring works from students of 17 area high schools, is on display Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Jagged Little Pill,” a musical based on Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette’s chart-topping hits, is playing at the Wharton Center Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. For younger audiences, All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre will perform “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Another great option for kids ages 2 to 4 is Impression 5 Science Center’s Sparking Science play session Friday at 10 a.m. This week’s theme is “Curious Chemists.”

For skate-based-sport fans, MSU will take on Notre Dame in hockey at the Munn Ice Arena Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m., and Lansing Roller Derby will host its first bout of 2023 (a doubleheader) Saturday at 5 p.m. at Court One Training Center in East Lansing. 

Feeling musical? Absolute Gallery is hosting a jubilee Saturday with a drum circle from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 p.m. In between, singer-songwriter Sammie Hershock will serenade guests with “piano-fueled folk music for the soul.”

This week’s travelogue, Friday at 7 p.m. at the Foster Community Center, will feature beautiful cathedrals, castles, palaces and town squares throughout Central Europe, in countries such as Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Learn to make shortbread three ways (black sesame, masala chai and lemon-rosemary) at Bradly’s HG Sunday at 4 p.m. Or, let others do the cooking for you at PRISM’s drag brunch and bingo, 2 p.m. at The Junction.
