A minty fresh weekend

Though the summer is beginning to wind down, this weekend’s event calendar is still piping hot, offering a smooth-jazz festival and plenty more live music, a free festival for military veterans and their families, St. Johns’ Mint Festival, new art exhibits, tons of children’s activities and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Americana/folk/pop duo Keynote Sisters at East Lansing’s Ann Street Plaza and blues musician Deacon Earl and Harrison Roadhouse, both at 6; Bob Seger tribute band Shakedown at Lake Lansing Park South at 6:15; singer-songwriter Darin Larner Jr. at Lansing Shuffle, singer-songwriter Taylor Taylor at Mash Bar and progressive rock/funk band Chirp with psychedelic folk duo the Rupple Brothers and electronic funk-rock musician Jay Cotter at Mac’s Bar, all at 7; ABtrio, an instrumental jazz group led by guitarist Adam Bronstein, at UrbanBeat at 7; singer-songwriter Alexandria McMath at the Peanut Barrel at 8; and party band Smokey Bear at Mash Bar at 10. Saturday evening, we have rock/pop cover group the Lynx Band at UrbanBeat, the Mason Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Players at University United Methodist Church, singer-songwriter Matthew Shannon at the Irish Pub and  Atomic Annie at Lansing Brewing Co., all at 7. Ending the weekend on Sunday is saxophone ensemble Quartet Fiume at Michigan State University’s Beal Botanical Garden at 2 p.m.; Lansing Community College’s Jazz Ensemble at University Lutheran Church and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show, both at 6 p.m.; folk/rock/country duo Wilderhoney at the Avenue at 7 p.m.; punk band Black Flag at Grewal Hall at 224 at 8 p.m.; and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.

Even more live music will wash over the lawn of the Marshall Street Armory at saxophonist Phil Denny’s sixth annual Smooth Jazz Fête, running 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a smooth-jazz happy hour 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the AC Hotel and a smooth-jazz brunch 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Toscana.

If you’d like to make some music of your own, Elderly Instruments will hold a beginners’ banjo workshop 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Art displays on view this weekend include “Resonant Earth” and “Always Different, Always the Same” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; outdoor painters’ group En Plein Air Mid-Michigan’s “Alluring Nature 2024” show at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday. “Eye Witness,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “DOOMSCROLLING” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; and “Figuring It All Out: An Artistic Study of the Human Figure” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Events for the kids include Grand Ledge Area District Library’s weekly Messy Play Fun Day 2 to 4 p.m. Friday; Eaton Rapids Area District Library’s end-of-summer-reading foam party 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Playground of Dreams;  a screening of “Wonka” 9 p.m. Friday at Holt’s Veterans Memorial Gardens; a Kids’ Day 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Holt’s Valhalla Park, featuring a petting zoo, inflatables, magic shows, face painting, balloon twisting and more; a National S’mores Day celebration 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan’s Lansing Regional Center in Grand Ledge, featuring a foam party, a slime bar, archery, crafts, science activities, s'mores and more; and Potter Park Zoo’s Twilight Adventures 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, featuring a self-guided scavenger hunt, conservation education stations, s’mores and games.

St. Johns’ Mint Festival runs 2 to 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Clinton County Fairgrounds, featuring a juried craft show, a flea market, a carnival, food trucks, a mint ice cream booth and more. For information on special events each day, including live performances, a basketball tournament and a parade, visit the website. There will also be block parties in downtown St. Johns 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, offering live music, food trucks and alcoholic beverages. Attendees must be 21 or older.

The Tri-County Office on Aging will celebrate its 50th anniversary 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at its main office on South Cedar Street. Guests are invited to drop in and hear local leaders share their appreciation for TCOA’s impact over the past 50 years. There will be food trucks onsite.

Grewal Hall at 224 will host a Chappell Roan dance party 8 p.m. Friday.

Andrez Chuney, garden director at Lansing’s SORA Gardens, will lead a class on canning and freezing fruits and vegetables 10 a.m. Saturday at the Allen Neighborhood Center.

VETLIFE, a nonprofit organization that offers free resources, programs and events for military veterans and their families, will host its annual Vet Fest 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. It will offer more than 60 veteran-specific resource booths, plus prize giveaways for veterans, backpack giveaways for the first 200 children in attendance, complimentary food and beverages, live music, a kids’ zone and more. Attendees will be asked to show their military IDs at check-in.

Finally, Capital Pro Wrestling will host a series of matches at the Fledge beginning 3 p.m. Sunday.
