Charity events, a car show and a cannabis celebration

Though the weather is only predicted to cool down to typical early fall temperatures this weekend, it seems September has brought an influx of indoor events, like movie screenings, new theater productions, Michigan State University volleyball games, a community singalong concert and a poetry reading. Those who are looking to soak up the weather while it lasts can also enjoy an outdoor cannabis block party and a car show. 

For Friday evening’s live music, we have reggae-rock band HWT at Horrocks Tavern and rock musician Mark Grinnell at Harrison Roadhouse, both at 6; country-rock band Three Demon Bag at Lansing Shuffle and new local supergroup Sassiety at UrbanBeat, both at 7; funk band Summer of Sol at the Green Door at 8:30; and R&B/pop/funk cover group The Love Effect at Mash Bar and country/rock duo Deer & Elk at the Irish Pub, both at 9. Saturday evening, we have classic-rock cover band Medusa at Lansing Brewing Co. at 7; country musicians David Nail and Audrey Ray at Grewal Hall at 224 at 8; DJ collective Scratch Pilots at the Green Door at 8:30; folk/country singer-songwriter Kara Cole at Mash Bar and punk bands Danger Cat and Rot Knot with gloomy indie-rock band A Rueful Noise at the Avenue, both at 9; and Tejano band Motivo at UrbanBeat at 9:30. Ending the weekend on Sunday is Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.; JP Peters of pop band JP & the Energy at Summerlands Brewing Co. in Holt and folk-rock singer-songwriter Lucas Powellat the Avenue, both at 7 p.m.; and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays DJ show at 9 p.m.

Art displays on view this weekend include an exhibition by local painter Joel Ellis at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday; “Resonant Earth” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; the Shiawassee Artists’ Guild’s “Reflections” show at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; “Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People,” “Eye Witness” and “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; and “Extinct: An Artistic Study of Animals Loved and Lost” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This month’s busy theater schedule kicks off with two musicals this weekend: “Annie” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Owosso’s Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” staged by Peppermint Creek Theatre Co., 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood.

The Michigan branch of Casting for Recovery, a national nonprofit that provides free fly-fishing retreats for women with breast cancer, will hold a fundraiser breakfast 7 to 9 a.m. Friday at the Wharton Center’s Christman Lounge. The event will feature a speech by Robyn Fralick, head coach of MSU women’s basketball.

Visit Red Cedar Friends’ meeting house on Turner Street in Old Town 6:30 p.m. Saturday for a peace-themed singalong concert, hosted by PeaceQuest Greater Lansing.

The Lifeboat Network Center, a nonprofit that provides support to mid-Michigan residents recovering from addiction, will host its second annual recovery recognition ceremony and hygiene drive 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. Dinner and dessert will be served. The hygiene drive will support Essential Blessings, which distributes products on the second Sunday of each month at Reutter Park. 

Unity Spiritual Center of Lansing’s monthly euchre tournament begins 7 p.m. Friday, with an optional potluck at 6:30 p.m.

MSU women’s volleyball will face off against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 7 p.m. Friday, the Marist Red Foxes 3 p.m. Saturday and the Loyola Ramblers 1 p.m. Sunday, all at the Breslin Center.

Village Crafters will host an arts and crafts sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Charlotte’s First Baptist Church. Attendees who bring donations of non-perishable food items for the Charlotte Food Bank will be entered into a prize drawing.

Pure Options will hold a ticketed back-to-school block party 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at its Frandor location, featuring live music, cannabis vendors, food trucks, games, exclusive promotions and more. Rapper 2 Chainz will headline the 21-plus event.

Visit Summerlands Brewing Co. 2 p.m. Saturday for a free screening of “The Last Starfighter” or 10:30 p.m. Saturday for a screening of “Forrest Gump.”

ShesUnCovered, a nonprofit that supports women and girls with hair loss, will hold a “Moo-Moos & Mocktails” fundraiser 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle of David Church. Guests are invited to dress up in their best moo-moos and enjoy beverages, giveaways, best-dressed contests, vendors and raffles.

Shaheen Chevrolet’s annual car show runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, with registration open from 9 a.m. to noon. All vehicles are welcome. There will also be door prizes, food trucks, vendors, a DJ and League of Enchantment superheroes.

The Lansing Poetry Club will kick off its fall Copper Chimney Lounge Poetry Series with readings by Austin, Texas-based poet Hollie Hardy and Lansing-area poet Jo Marie Gram 4 p.m. Sunday at University United Methodist Church in East Lansing. An open mic will follow the readings.

Finally, in celebration of Grandparents’ Day, all grandparents will receive free entry to Potter Park Zoo on Sunday.
